Where does James Frawley rate...

Scarlett debuted in 1998 but only played six matches before 2000.

He was first selected as All-Australian full back in 2003 in a team that won only seven games for the season.

Frawley looks a gun. :thumbsu:

thanks mate
so my guess has him about 23-24, and i think frawley was named AA as a 22 yr old , so exciting times ahead for this young man

Scarlett was 24 in '03 & Chip 22 last year. Scarlett had played 91 games up to the end of that season, Chip 61. As above, Geelong were an average team in Scarlett's 1st AA year as were MFC last year. Scarlett also won his only BnF in '03, but has 3 runner ups & 5 other top 10 BnF finishes (9 total) to go with his 5 AAs. Frawley got a top 10 BnF finish in '09 & was 2nd last year as a 22yo, Scarlett finished 2nd in '02 as a 23yo. Taking very similar paths, Frawley tracking a bit ahead of Scarlett in AA terms. I'd be happy for him to be even mentioned in the same breath as Scarlett at the end of his career

Obviously I'm a fan with my BF name, I haven't really had a favourite player since Jimmy or Tingay (maybe McLean) but Frawley has won me over.

I can even tell you the moment I knew he'd be a player. Round 5 2008 vs Carlton, we got smacked & Fev had killed Warnock (i think) kicking 5 to 3/4 time. Finally after me yelling drunkenly from the crowd all game to try someone else on Fev, a 19yo Frawley playing his first game of the year & only his 10th in total went to him at the start of the last. In that last quarter he beat Fev in multiple marking contest both on the lead & in the air, didn't give away a free kick. Stats will show Fev kicked 2 for the quarter, but one was the freakiest goal kicked out of the air from 30m out & the other he kicked from the only mark he took on Frawley for the quarter, which he had to lead right out to the boundary 55m out to take. I remember that kick too, Fev kicked it 60m from the boundary & it was never missing. Fev was in red hot form then, kicking 7 & 8 in the game prior & 7 in that game, he finished the year with 99 goals. Frawley showed me in that quarter he could match the best pure key forward in the league at full flight, been my favourite player ever since

thanks for doin all the work on getting those stats, its quite remarkable he was named AA full back at 22, the skys the limit for this kid it because i personally believe frawley can end up better than scarlett if he keeps tracking the way he is

The big difference for me is that Scarlett was signficantly influencing matches for Geelong way before his first AA season or B&F win. At the moment, Chip might be our best defender but he doesn't dominate the entire back half the way Scarlett has done pretty much since he started or guys like Dench and Southby did. That said, he does stand out in his part of the ground the way the Reiwoldts do at Richmond and St.Kilda or Franklin does at Hawthorn.

I'd also throw out the name Steven Smith; one of the forgotten greats of our club. At the moment I think Chip is on a par with Smithy with the potential to go ahead of him by the end of his career.

He is the complete package. I would love to see him play just one game in the midfield, I reckon he could do some amazing things there as well. His ability to break tackles is superb. Watching him play he actually welcomes the contact. He saught of pauses and then just flicks them away like flies and then burns away from them. God I love him.

As said earlier in the thread he can play on smalls and talls just as effectively. I just hope he stays away from injury and who knows how good he will be. But love him too bits.

PS: Love the write up Chip. So much passion :thumbsu:.

It will be Garland vs Buddy.

Chip vs Rioli, if he plays forward.

i reckon it will be like this, if buddy goes up the field they will use chip on him because he can match for pace and hurt him around the ground, and when he goes deep garland will cover him not that his marking ability worries me at all, so ovverated in that department (buddy)

Yeah but the AA year wasn't until 24, so the seasons before would be equivalent to this year & last for Chip. It's a long time ago & there may be a bias towards a MFC player, but I honestly don't think Scarlett was significantly better than Frawley at this stage of his career, not just as a defender but in dominating games. Can beat defenders, we saw that against Jack, but he's most impressive running with the ball & taking guys on out of the backline, similar to Scarlett at his peak. Chip has a pretty steep curve to follow to keep matching Scarlett, as said if he's anywhere near him in 10 years I'll be more than happy.

I know players can't choose who they play with, but Scarlett also had McGrath to play along side in the early days, where as Chip came in alongside the likes of Warnock as his KP defensive partner :o

Chippa is very good but still has a lot of improving to do in his kicking.

I think that this is the one thing that is holding him back at the moment .

The upside is that he is only a youngster and will only get better .
