During the early 90's when the Swans weren't exactly flavour of the month, there were literally hundreds of footballers who roamed the field in a Swans guernsey (ranging from all-in-all champion such as Gerrard Healy or Greg Williams to out-and-out hack, could mentions heaps here! ;) ).

One of my favourite players during this time was Stanford (or was it Sanford?) Wheeler. He wasn't the most capable of players from memory but did seem to have a bit of flair, I mainly remember that he had dreadlocks. Last I heard I think he's playing for some club in the Sydney AFL.

Does anyone else have any favourite players from the infamous early 90's?

Jamie Lawson was always good value

The fastest player I ever saw play the game, absolutely tragic the way he had to leave the game behind.

I hear he is playing club footy down South Gippsland way - good on 'im.

Others ? - Simon Minton Connell and Richard Osborne in the foward lines was alsways good for a laugh:D

Darren Kappler had a terrific raking kick.

But my stand out player from the bad old days is Mark Bayes.

he was a class act from beginning to end - easily our most skillful player of that era I think, I never saw another footballer who had quite such a beautiful, technically perfect raking left foot kick.

He was a joy to watch and in those days he would be usually selected at Half Back and asked to stand the oppositions best attacking player.

I honestly think if only the Swans were at least halfway competitive in those days, Bayes would have won at least one Brownlow.

a dead set legend.

cheers

Yep, on Bayesey. Only started following the sport in '97 but even in Bayes' last couple of years he was a favourite of mine. Loved the left foot kick, had a style about him that was great to watch. Had a blinder in the 2nd match I ever attended... against Essendon at the SCG.

all the players u guys have mentioned have been right on the spot. God to think back to the early 90's there were so many cult figures. I used to live in Sydney up until 93 before moving to melbourne so i have quite a vivid memory of the games up at the SCG. Stevie Wright comes to mind i think he still played in the early 90's , David Murphy was good value ( he has played in those legends matches quite a few times )dennis carrol, bolton, and who remembers the full forward shane fell ? oh the list could go on and on.....
