Don't doubt any of that. The art of list management and winning flags though is making the right calls and getting performance from all types of people. McNamara was a overseas rookie list long shot. A choice between Gault & Ceglar was fair enough. Whether it was the right choice is up for debate. Wood was let go anyway. Keeffe isn't relevant. he's a 3rd tall back and probably not good enough anyway.

I get that we made a choice and that part of the decision making process involved his personality and effort. I do think we weighed personality issues far too heavily over ability in our decision making over the last few years though as I have said repeatedly. It has cost us.

Yep, and watching the VFL that season Gault was ahead of Ceglar in the pecking order. As were Wood and even Shae Mc.

Yes the art of list management is making the right calls but you can only go on the evidence before you and your assumption that they made the wrong call on Ceglar for the wrong reasons, with the full benefit of 20/20 hindsight, assumes that at the time he projected as a better prospect than those retained.

Behavioural and attitudinal issues only reinforce his vulnerability on a pecking order.

Ceglar has now become a reasonable senior player at Hawthorn (although hardly good enough to merit all the angst we see on the boards), and good luck to the kid. Sadly, history is littered with players who don't grab their initial opportunities and most don't get 2nd chances.

That's more like it.

Seriously sometimes you got to know when to fold them, Gault is a fold em.

If he can be retained on the rookie list still think he'll get 1 more year. If he has to be promoted then his time may well be nigh!

We aren't in heated disagreement. We are debating a 1 year list decision on a list with others to exit in a supposedly weak draft year.
Who said anything about it being heated? I just can't be bothered going around in circles on this topic.

The art is in projecting development. This is where Hine has done well at draft time. The work we probably haven't done as well as we could is working with attitude or behaviour issues. Not saying it's easy but it's part of the premiership puzzle IMO. Carlton have been far worse at it than we have. Freo had a big win with Walters.
