I just remembered one example of how to beat the zone by FOOT

we had a player kick out to trav on the Back flank (it was a contested mark), trav then kick the ball long and flat (about 65m) to anthony at CHF who took a clean chest mark, who then kick inside fifty for a goal

About 40 seconds full field transistion, zone completely nullified all done using footskills

Why dont we just put everyone into a complete state of shock and go up the middle

Firstly, one example doesn't not prove a system correct, much like one example of a Bryan turnover does not prove it incorrect.

I would say though, that if we're relying on Travis Cloke's field kicking to beat the zone, we might as well not show up. Worst field kick in our side, and we have a lot of iffy ones.

Remember when we brought in Ryan Lonie for a Hawthorn game specifically to beat the zone?

At least we can look back and laugh now...

MDC i will saty by long kicking and hard running over handpassing every day of the week mate

It maybe old fashioned and unfashionable at the moment but when it is done alright it is unstoppable, another team to kick more then handpass in north (who play eerily similar to us) have an awesome record against the "zoners" of hawthorn

I think that's very harsh....he has the ability to hit targets more effectively than the likes of Bryan, Johnson and coo.

Cloke has no imagination or creativity though, he pretty much sees and kicks.

He can hit targets alright, but the ones he chooses are pretty poor.

He never kicked the thing long all night, he shat his pants and handpassed ever time he touched it or better yet kick backwards and sideways

When we got back into that contest it was heath and mrty's hard running and low and behold long kicking that broke the game open

I understand. I disagree obviously, but I'm always for more discussion of it either way, as I think it's an interesting subject.

I would take issue with that - statistically, no-one plays even close to us in terms of Kick:Handball. North are middle of the pack, and are actually closer to Geelong than they are to us. We are that different to everyone else in the league.

See, there is a solution to every problem.

Or, we could let Johnson kick in and it wouldnt matter if you zoned or not. Random wins everytime!

LOL...never thought of that...Johnno can be the "designated zone breaker".:D

They play the same width based contested ball game as us, and kick more then geelong.

basically my whole theory is in ball flight no player can run that fast, if we have enough hard running and players that can at least back themselves to break even in a marking contest and have the trust in forwards to know they will be where they need to be.

Slow ball movement and piss farting around up field kills forwards, long kicks even ugly floater ones help forwards as long as they come in fast

I think Adelaide got a better rub of the green on the day with umpiring, but how can you say the Edwards free was the only one to impact on the game? If you mean the scoreboard, then how about Cloke's huge dive 30m out in the 2nd quarter that gifted you a goal? I know Adelaide supporters are always the first to whinge when something doesn't go our way, but let's not go overboard. The umpiring was diabolical for both sides, at different periods of the game. Something needs to be done.

we let ourselves down with poor as hell skills. half the game we couldnt even pick the ball up off the bloody deck cleanly let alone kick it to a target 30 metres away. bring in beams and mcarthy and f*ck off johnson and toovey. you need precise skills to beat teams that play tough defense like hawthorn, adelaide etc

i agree cox can be frustrating but i think we need to have patience with him. once his awareness gets a bit better he honestly has the potential to be one of the better rebounding players in the league

I'll tell you what went wrong... we let them get a lead of 34-6 early in the game. From there it was catch up football, we still should have won however you give a less talented side such a lead and they will be up and about all day to keep such a lead.

Round one... we should beat the Dees in Round two than we have Geelong.

a)we have no superstars...we have a team of average players who must all play to the best of their ability for us to win...maxwell is captain..enough said!
b) on the weekend we failed to guard the adelaide 50m zone..letting them get free shots from directly in front
c)I, like many, are happy to accept a development year or two and let the kids develop...wellingham, sidebottom, beams, reid, mc carthy, dawes etc...
d)just maybe, as much as i love mm, the new gameplans have past him..thus making him less reactionary to oppositions plans...
e) we only lost by 4 points to a finalist from 2008...with a some bad umpiring and a horror first and last quarter
f)why did leon davis play after being so sick during the week...interesting if carlton play judd this week with his flu
