Pity he didnt play on Mitchell in the last 15 minutes of that game - more to the point why didnt any Geelong player - Selwood -Kelly- Caddy - take your pick - man up Mitchell

Yeah I was thinking the same. Unfortunately because Hunt had such a nightmare of a game, he had to be subbed, and then I suppose they felt Jimmy had to stay back for most of the game. It was only 5 points, but they'd probably handle Mitchell differently. We couldn't barely stick a tackle on him.

I'm happy with Jimmy as a utility, but preferably kept away from the last line of defence. Although I think as a group now we're not as sure-footed in that area as we used to be, we seem to concede more 'easy' goals than in past years (from the goal square in general play etc), and don't seem to be able to get them at the other end.

Why not as a tagger? We need one, has the offensive capacity to match. Did a reasonable job on Lenny in '09!

Otherwise not in the backline, gave away more strawberries with cream than any other back this season. Seriously handed some goals to opposition teams. Crucial ones too.

That was 4 years ago. Big question mark over whether he can actually do it now.

However, it's a valid point that we don't have a designated tagger coming through.

Tagger. We really got killed in the two losing finals from not having one. Bartel has got the team focus and most of the players that hurt us aren't quick (Barlow / Mitchell). It would be nice to have him around the ball a bit more too.

Midfield, where he starred and won a Brownlow, and we need our stars at the centre clearance.

Could tag, as he did against Lenny Hayes, 2009 GF.

But I think he would be awesome up forward. Bartel is a great kick at goal, and kicks the ones under pressure, so he could get three or four a game. He is also a great overhead mark for a guy his size.

If Chapman retires, maybe Bartel could slot into his spot very nicely.

Up forward seems the logical option now, with runs through the middle as well at times. But people need to temper their expectations. He's only kicked more than 20 goals in a season twice. But he seems far more suited there now to anywhere else.

But I think he could kick more goals if he played down there more often.

What's the odds he gets played in the backline again next year. Really hope CS doesn't have the blinkers on with Jimmy. Will be disappointed/concerned if they persist with him there.

Half forward/Forward Pocket. Him and chappy seem to be the only ones who can hit a leading forward on the chest these days.

That's one of my major worries. I think with some of the decorated veterans he'll put them anywhere to keep them in the side, rather than play a more suitable player in their place. Classic example was early this season - he had both Bartel and Corey as defenders rather than investing time into say Thurlow (Guthrie was injured earlier in the year).

My money's on them keeping Bartel in the backline. Despite what occurred with Milburn and Mooney in 2011, I'm not sure they want to face the tough decisions. They had plenty of chances to do that this year and didn't do it once.

Steve Johnson should be a permanent mid ONLY if we get a tagger to make up for his lack of defending on his man. Give Stevie J free license to roam and he will do serious damage to teams but needs to be offset by a tagger who obliterates one of their mids a game. This leaves Bartel to be the marking mid sized forward and Chappy to be the dangerous mid sized forward.
Ideally we could have a fit Hawkins and Chapman in the goal square with Pods and Bartel around half forward due to their marking prowess. Bartel is excellent at tackling and along with Stokes and Motlop the pressure in the forward line would be unreal.
So it would line up as Chapman, Hawkins, Bartel and Stoke, Pods and Motlop as FF and HF lines, but realistically have Chapman and Hawkins sit deep the rest pushing up. If we have to Bartel can drag his man deeper into the forward line to allow for his marking or having Chapman and Bartel crumbing Hawkins would be effective too.
