Where to now for Otten?

Why when a player is outside the best 22 does he automatically enter as "trade bait".
Surely good players outside the 22 are just the sort of players that you should trade. And in turn would possibly be seeking a trade themselves.

At the moment we have a rising star runner up (he was wasn't he?) on our list who's only benefitting South Adelaide.

Geez people are prepared to write off guys pretty quickly.....
We've got a small injury list at the moment which can't stay that way forever. No doubt he's not back to his best following the knee surgery, but it normally takes a season off, then a season back before full confidence is restored. He is a quality player and he'll work his way back for sure

But we have a total of zero players on the injury list. That's why each club has 46 players on the list, in case injuries do occur to clubs.

If we had 6 or 7 important players on the injury list, Otten would be playing.

How would Collingwood cope if Jolly went down, but one year ago they decided to trade Wood because he can't get into the 22. They'd be absolutely smashed in the ruck.

Same situation here. People are calling for Otten to be traded, but if Rutten and Talia went down with shoulder injuries, we'd be screwed if we had no back up.

I can't remember the last trade that occurred where the player was forced to leave.

Yeah, and at some clubs if they had 0 players on their injury list Otten would be playing. Our mates down the road for instance.

The fact is that Otten may be more valuable to another club than he is to us. And in those cases trading has to be an option.

I like Otten by the way. If it was up to me he'd been in and Doughty/Reilly/Douglas out instantaneously.

Don't disagree with that all. I'm saying it's pointless from a club point of view to trade him.

I wouldn't be surprised if he requested a trade.

As you said, he would be getting a game at other teams.

I don't agree with the view that we should trade him just because he's "Struggling". Keep him is my first preference. If he decides he's better elsewhere, then that's his decision to make. Then lets try and get the best deal for him if he decided to go.

Sorry i just choked on my glass of Shiraz.....Did you really say that Otten should instantly be in the side before Douglas, Doughty and REILLY........

F**k me......... Reilly is AA at present
Leopard... spots. He'll let us down, mark my words! You don't go 9 seasons without a top 10 B&F finish if you're any sort of footballer.

Well... you do disagree with that then.

It's pointless to have an asset marking time in the SANFL just on the off chance that we'll have enough injuries in his area of the ground to warrant picking him.

He isn't gaining interest while he's sitting there.

Fine, lets trade every player on the list who's playing SANFL then. That will be a great plan.

To use a cricketing analogy and to quote the great Ian Chappell " you only as good as your last innings son"

Reilly's last 9 seasons are irrelevant, in an epic encounter against Sydney his intercept mark, play on and precision pass lead to the match winning goal...

I saw the the most recent Crows game live and his hardness and leadership stood out...

If it's going to make our 22 better, then of course we should.

The reason teams don't is that most players outside the 22 have minimal market value. Otten may be different. The irony is that for him to have any currency on the trade table he needs to play AFL games and show he is good enough and hasn't lost confidence in his body... but if he shows that then we wouldn't want to lose him.

Yeah he's going good.

Now.

That was the same Sydney game that he got caught in a marking contest ONCE with Adam Goodes and the result was... well... it went down as an uncontested mark to Goodes

If he can stay away from any decent opponent, play loose as often as possible and have all of his possessions in clear space then I'm sure he will continue to have a good season. Take any of those things away though...

Has anyone ever since that Monty Python Sketch..

"Is this the right room for an argument?"

"

Man: Oh look, this isn't an argument.
Mr Vibrating: Yes it is.
Man: No it isn't. It's just contradiction.
Mr Vibrating: No it isn't.
Man: It is!
Mr Vibrating: It is not.
Man: Look, you just contradicted me.
Mr Vibrating: I did not.
Man: Oh you did!!
Mr Vibrating: No, no, no.
Man: You did just then.
Mr Vibrating: Nonsense!
Man: Oh, this is futile!
Mr Vibrating: No it isn't.

That would be the 10cm taller, 10kg heavier Adam Goodes, and it's not 10kg of flab. Hampson marked over the top of Wright in the Carlton game, was that his fault too?

Ryan O'Keefe isn't decent?

Tough gig definitely. Tough for Hendo too who played on Goodes for the bulk of the night and isn't exactly a man mountain.

That's why the quality defenders we have had like Hart and Torney make such a difference. They end up on a Milne... they can handle it. They end up on a Koschitzke... they can handle it. You are not having to constantly cover up weaknesses.

Reilly has found a niche - a rebounding half back, sometimes loose man, playing on the opposition's less dangerous forwards. Great for him and he's played the best footy he has for the club. I worry though that the weaknesses we've seen for the best part of 10 years will eventually be exposed down back.

Ryan O'Keefe isn't decent?
Not nearly as good as he once was, though he did manage 3 goals on that night

Yes he wasn't performing when he was playing for the Crows this year, but when you have zero players on the injury list, someone has to drop out.

I'm in no doubt if we had a regular injury list, he'd be in the team. Depth players are extremely important.

I don't think it's so much that we see them as trade bait, as it is we're worried that they'll seek opportunities elsewhere like Maric did and Jacobs before him. We've got a few blokes there who are more than capable of playing AFL football, but yet can't crack a spot in our side. I really hope we don't lose anyone, but its inevitable that some players will seek opportunities elsewhere in situations that we are in now and I think that's understandable.

I certainly don't want to see blokes like Otten, McKernan or Knights traded, but I'm not going to stick my head in the sand and assume that they're quite happy playing out their careers waiting for someone to get injured if they feel they can get opportunities elsewhere.

I agree.

But we have other people saying that the list will improve if we trade these depth players like McKernan and Otten.

If he wants to go, I can understand why he would want to go. But if I was Phil Harper, I'd be looking to re-sign him.

Depends what other sides are willing to give up for him. Personally I don't see clubs giving up what he's worth so I doubt we'll see him traded and for that note I think once he gets a few games as a midfielder for Souths and then is given a shot in the midfield in our side, he'll have no troubles holding a spot. Last time we tried him in the midfield it was straight back from a Knee reco in a side with a failing midfield, he stuggled a little with his return as such and was thrown into defense where he lost any semblance of confidence.

Having said all that, if a club came to us with a good enough offer, which would improve our best 22, we'd be mad not to take it.
