Don't forget studio/apt accommodation and the like ie/ http://www.oakshotelsresorts.com/melbourne-accommodation/

I booked Oaks on Collins a couple of days ago!

I've stayed around the area the previous two trips and the location can't be beat in terms of ease of getting to everything. Take the Skybus from the Airport then walk 500m from Southern Cross station. Easy as.

I booked a deal where if you book 7 nights it's all fully refundable provided you cancel 48 hours prior. Seems to have disappeared off their booking page now though...

Yep - and the floorspace is much better for cartwheels :)

Was recommended this place so ended up booking a room for $79 a night

Even if it's a shithole I can't complain too much, it's about a third of the price of the next cheapest hotel and the location is kick ass. And they don't gouge people for the grand final.

Just checked and their twin rooms are all booked for the Fri/Sat. Should have checked this thread earlier.

I can thoroughly recommend the langham on the south bank. My personal favourite when staying in Melbourne with my business. Have booked for the entire gf week so I can fully soke up the grand final atmosphere.

Even just looking at the pictures on their website it looks too luxurious for me.

All my travel has been done in dingy backpackers so I'm used to staying in dodgy places, I'll just be looking for the cheapest place I can.

It's worth the extra money to go to langhams IMHO. But the main thing is you will be there - that's what counts.

A few years ago now I flew over to melb for the Boxing Day ashes test. The English squad was staying at langhams as well as a few retired players. I went down to the hotel bar and Gladstone small was standing next to me. Had a good chat with him for 5-10 min before rejoining my travel party. But I just thought to myself afterwards - yeah it was expensive to stay at the hotel - but it was worth it for that experience alone.

Did he ask you to help him with his tie :D

Do you mind sharing? I have stayed here, tram line out front, near the casino, walking distance not too far to the MCG. Includes continental breakfast. $50 in a 4 shared dorm.

I have stayed at Space Hotel, on Russell St, near where it becomes Lygon St. Has dorms and hotel rooms. A single hotel room is about $80 with shared bathroom. Ultra modern and super-clean.

I walk pretty much everywhere but uni and I live in Fitzroy. Walk off those baklavas and dinners in the 20 minutes it takes from Swanston to somewhere like Fitzroy or Carlton. I love North Melbourne too as a suburb, great place, and has plenty of price ranges and heaps of options due to be a backpacker hub (don't let the eurotrash put you off – they're never around. I don't know what they do).

City is still really good for most people as its convenient and easy if you're new to Melbs.
