- the Twin Towers collapsed?
On a normal school day, I turned Sunrise on at around 6:30am. I was the first in my family to know, and didnt have a clue what the World Trade Centre was, but it looked important. Told mum, and she instantly knew how serious it was.

- you heard about the 2002 Bali Bombings?
I think I was sleeping over at a friends and recall his father waking us

- Princess Diana died?
I just returned from a friends 9th birthday party, and a good AFL game on TV was interrupted by the news(might have been late in the bombers upset over the Crows) There was tornado-like weather outside as well.
I can also recall watching a Swans game that was also interrupted by Thredbo news several weeks later. Actually, I think it was the Stuart Diver rescue.

- your club won its last premiership?
at home. My swans parents were a little deflated, but generous in defeat. Year 12 exams were only a few weeks later. Like in the final 5 minutes of the 2005 GF, I was wandering around the house in absolute unintelligible torture. Remember wearing my WCE heritage jumper, drinking the first beer my dad ever gave me, and returning a video on pushbike in all my glory.

- cathy freeman lit the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony in 2000`
watching on the box. the 2000 opening ceremony was very memorable.

- you heard kevin sheedy had been sacked?
meh. His press conference was probably just after I joined Navy Recruit School.

- steve waugh/shane warne retired?
more meh. Cant remember with Waugh, but remember the breaking news on Warne, just following the series-winning test in Perth.

- you heard bin laden was killed?
Lol, I know it was only recently, but I cant remember, thats how insignificant it felt to me. I might have been at work.

- saddam was caught?
No idea.

- port arthur massacre in 1996?
I was only 7yo, remember discussions about it with parents and teachers, but cant recall the initial moment I found out.

- the Twin Towers collapsed?
I Was fast asleep. I remember mum telling me the next morning after I angerily awoke to the news taking over Cheeze TV. When she explained it too me, I felt amazed rather than shocked or saddened. I guess I didn't really comprehend the full extent of what had actually happened. But what sticks out for me most was when I arrived at school and started telling my teacher all about it. He choose me to explain to the class during morning "prayer" what had happened over night.

- you heard about the 2002 Bali Bombings?
No idea. Do remembering reading the Herald Sun all about it though. I recall something about an entire local footy team (NRL I think) being in the particular area the bombs went off, with around half the team actually falling victim.

- Princess Diana died?
No idea.

- your club won its last premiership?
Was at Nan and Pop's house, in my scarf, socks, shorts, beanie, flag the lot. Remember it so well. Cut out every player from the Sun's player preview thingo and pasted it onto these A4 pieces of paper stapled together, in a book type setup. Nice big heading with "Brisbane Lions v Collingwood" on the front and a "G" and "P" section beside each player to take down their Goal and Behind tally.

- cathy freeman lit the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony in 2000`
Was with mum in the lounge room.

- you heard kevin sheedy had been sacked?
No idea.

- steve waugh/shane warne retired?
Was at Dad's for Waugh, and Nan's for Warne.

- you heard bin laden was killed?
Probably at home aimlessly surfing the net/on Facebook. Actually, I think it was someone's status on Facebook which may have alerted me to his death.

- saddam was caught?
Was at school in the morning before class.

- port arthur massacre in 1996?
Was too young to remember.

I remember Osama's death. I was on my school bus on fb when i saw a group "OSB world hide and seek champion 2001-11" I googled it on my phone and had very mixed emotions.

Where were you when...

- the Twin Towers collapsed?

I was on BigFooty when it was happening, but just reading footy threads. Turned off, went to bed and then turned it on the next morning to see the boards covered in it, turned the TV on, told my family and drove to work feeling like the world might be ending.

- you heard about the 2002 Bali Bombings?

Really can't remember where I was. Remember seeing seeing breaking news but can't picture what I was doing or who I was with.

- Princess Diana died?

Remember this well. Sitting with my ex (we have a daughter together) watching TV and they announced the car crash. We then went to her place and kept watching and they announced Diana had died. That was shocking. I was affected greatly by that, not sure why.

- your club won its last premiership?

At home in Brisbane, jumping around my lounge room, eyes pretty moist.

- cathy freeman lit the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony in 2000`

Watched it live. No surprise that the answer to most of these things is 'watching TV'.

- you heard kevin sheedy had been sacked?

No idea, barely registered with me.

- steve waugh/shane warne retired?
Watching at home.

- you heard bin laden was killed?

BigFooty.

- saddam was caught?

BigFooty

- port arthur massacre in 1996?

Where were you when...

- the Twin Towers collapsed?
In bed in Adelaide watching talk footy and smokin' a spliff

- you heard about the 2002 Bali Bombings?
dunno

- Princess Diana died?
At a mate's place in Manchester, nursing a hangover. Collapsed in a drunken heap at the cricket club and crashed at a mates. Gf was extremely pissed off (moreso that I wasn't sharing her grief)

- your club won its last premiership?
the MCG

- cathy freeman lit the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony in 2000`
Somewhere in Greater Mancunia. Was thankful that I wasn't in Oz for the games. Did not watch an event.

- you heard kevin sheedy had been sacked?
Dunno.

- steve waugh/shane warne retired?
Not sure

- you heard bin laden was killed?
In a car with a right-wing American redneck work colleague. Did not share her joy.

- saddam was caught?
Looking for WMDs

- port arthur massacre in 1996?
Probably read it in The Guardian or The Independent. Was livin' in the UK

ok I know a lot of this is trivial compared to the really serious stuff but I thought I would put it up there . add to it if you think there's much missing from the past 10-20 years it's only a start.

so, where were you?

- the Twin Towers collapsed?
7 years old. Woke up expecting to watch Pokemon only to see the horrific scenes with my mum in disbelief. Was pretty much the main topic at school that day.

- you heard about the 2002 Bali Bombings?
My mum woke me up as we were planning a trip to Bali the very next month. That was obviously called off.

- Princess Diana died?
No idea, was only 3 years old.

- your club won its last premiership?
Was playing trains with my older brother whilst in Naracoorte with play being interrupted by screaming parents in the next room.

- cathy freeman lit the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony in 2000`
Watching on TV

- you heard kevin sheedy had been sacked?
Came home from school and it was on the TV, I just remember being in shock as he was coaching for longer than I had been alive so it was weird to see him go.

- steve waugh/shane warne retired?
Don't remember

- you heard bin laden was killed?
I think I was home and someone posted it on FB

- saddam was caught?
No idea

- port arthur massacre in 1996?
I was only 2 years old so I remember none of it

- the Twin Towers collapsed?
Turned the TV off minutes before the newsbreak. Turned the TV on the next morning (which I never do) while putting on my shoes, sat there for 10 minutes in disbelief.

- you heard about the 2002 Bali Bombings?
On BigFooty.

- Princess Diana died?
On the web using Lycos. :D

Just got home from playing Under 16s footy.

- the Twin Towers collapsed?
Like many I was young and awoke to watch my morning cartoons only to be greeted by this. It was somewhat surreal and the first time my eyes were opened to the evil in the real world.

- you heard about the 2002 Bali Bombings?
Was a troublesome time. My dad and his best mate were in a serious accident the day before it. I come home from school my mum told me what had happened and left a matter of minutes later with a friend to wait for my grandparents to look after me.

My dad was ok, battered and bruised but stable but his best mate was air lifted to Alfred (where he died 10 days later). The next day my grandparents took off too Melbourne and left me with my great grandma as my 2nd cousin (dads cousin) was caught in the Bali bombings and in a severe condition so that's when I found out. Fortunately he survived and even returned to play one last game of footy before hanging up the boots.

- Princess Diana died?
Not sure, remember a lot of fuss but not really anything specific. Too young.

- your club won its last premiership?
Parents lounge room.

- cathy freeman lit the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony in 2000`
Eh I remember Nikki Webster

- you heard kevin sheedy had been sacked?
Not sure but I remember being unimpressed with how it went down.

- steve waugh/shane warne retired?
Dunno

- you heard bin laden was killed?
Dad always has sky news on and rang me at work soon as it was announced.

- saddam was caught?
Sky news again

- port arthur massacre in 1996?
My parents must of shielded me from this. Never heard about till my mid teens 6-8 years ago

Boxing Day Tsunami - watching on TV. I was absolutely stunned, and then as it unfolded I could not fathom that a wall of water could kill so many. Then when it was revealed that Troy Broadbridge was missing and his death was confirmed, I was devastated.

Challenger Space Shuttle - Was visiting family in Melbourne having hitchhiked from Brisbane. Watched the launch on TV captured by Christa McAuliffe's story. Could not believe what I was watching. Affected me greatly. I even took the time to learn the names and backstories of all of the victims.

Michael Hutchence Death - I actually remember this as it was around the same time as Diana's death. I was at Southbank in Brisbane having just been swimming and I heard it on the car radio sitting in the car park. Felt terrible for his little daughter (and even worse not too long after when Paula Yates, her train wreck mother left her an orphan).

- the Twin Towers collapsed?
Woke up and could hear the tv from the lounge saying something about disaster in New York, I thought it was an earthquake. Walked into the lounge with my mum into tears and obivously found out what happened. I was in grade 6, remember that day being different...

- you heard about the 2002 Bali Bombings?
Don't remember this one tbh...

- Princess Diana died?
I remember this one even though I was young because the strange place we were in. We were in the garden section of a Mitre 10 when it came over their radio.

- your club won its last premiership?
Mate's place having a barby and drinks, hoping the same in 2 weeks

- cathy freeman lit the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony in 2000`
Watching it on the tv with my family. i do remember that but the most memorable moment from those games was the archery guy winning that gold medal. Simon Fairweather, great viewing.

- you heard kevin sheedy had been sacked?
Really? you put this with Sept. 11

- steve waugh/shane warne retired?
Watched it on tv.

- you heard bin laden was killed?
Was in a hospital clinic getting ready for a big operation I was going to have. Came up on their tv, if I was at home I probably wouldn't remember.

- saddam was caught?
I think Channel 7 was showing that Bagger Vance movie that night, good movie.

- port arthur massacre in 1996?

Can't remember this one.

Where were you when...

- the Twin Towers collapsed?
Watching the West Wing. When the first one hit I was wondering what sort of pilot error could do that. Then Mrs Landingham (in TWW) died after the news break. After TWW, live coverage had begun in time to see the second plane hit.
Apart from sheer shock, two things crossed my mind immediately on the second plane hitting. "F*** that's an attack" and that they had organised it well for maximum coverage, giving enough time for networks to all cross and show the second plane live.

- you heard about the 2002 Bali Bombings?
Can't remember, probably didn't catch it until the next morning

- Princess Diana died?
At home, wishing ABC radio would go to the TFL semi final that was on that day rather than sticking with a story I cared nothing about.

- your club won its last premiership?
Mate's place in Southbank. No chance of getting a ticket at a reasonable price.

- cathy freeman lit the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony in 2000`
fiik, Olympic care factor is nil, possibly had the TV on but can't be sure one way or the other

- you heard kevin sheedy had been sacked?
Probably read it on BF

- steve waugh/shane warne retired?
When they announced their retirements? Dunno. When they played their last games, watching cricket on TV.

- you heard bin laden was killed?
At work.

- saddam was caught?
Can't remember. It wasn't a big deal as far as I was concerned, he'd been out of power for a while and it was only going to be a matter of time before he was captured, killed, or mayor of a small town in Argentina.

- port arthur massacre in 1996?
On my way home from my parent's place in St Helens (Tas east coast) to my place in Launceston. As we were leaving Mum just said "there's been a shooting down south". At that time I had no idea it was a mass killing.

Fair bump:

the Twin Towers collapsed?
Think I was asleep when it actually happened, but found out about it driving from Leeton to Wagga for work early on the 12th, turned on the radio and it was everywhere. Was numb for a long time afterwards.

- you heard about the 2002 Bali Bombings?
In Leeton, returning from a trip to Griffith.

- Princess Diana died?
Was flying back from my grandmother's funeral in Adelaide to Perth. The airport was very silent when I arrived in Perth.

- your club won its last premiership?
The same place I was in 1997 - the Windsor pub in South Perth. If the Crows get into the GF again I probably should head back there.

- cathy freeman lit the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony in 2000`
Watching it on a big screen in a park in Wagga

- you heard kevin sheedy had been sacked?
Didn't stick in the memory exactly - IIRC may have been in WA for my aunts birthday when it happened.

- steve waugh/shane warne retired?
Watched it on tv.

- you heard bin laden was killed?
At work, read about it online

- saddam was caught?
Can't remember

- port arthur massacre in 1996?
Was in bed with gastro, listening to Rex Hunt calling the Trevor Barker memorial match (he passed away earlier that week), St K v Melb. That news didn't make me feel any better.

I'm old enough to remember John Lennon's death (was in the back of the family Datsun 200B coming back from a Xmas gathering for Dad's work, remember hearing it on the radio and Mum gasping), the Challenger disaster (saw it live on TV as a 12-year-old - couldn't believe it) and Australia winning the 2000 Olympics too (Syd-er-ney!) - remember the Late Show's take on it the night after best.

- the Twin Towers collapsed? Playing Gran Turismo 3. Turned it off for a break and heard about it as it was happening

- you heard about the 2002 Bali Bombings?
I was at home, heard about it the next morning.

- Princess Diana died?
Honestly I have no idea.

- your club won its last premiership?
At the ground... YEAH!

Out celebrating my Sisters birthday. Didn't see it live but have plenty of time since.

- port arthur massacre in 1996?

Too young to remember most of these but i'll try to recall some:

Twin Towers Collapse:
In bed asleep when Mum woke me up early and said theres been a terrorist attack in the US. Remember vividly watching it on every channel for hours, even had a day off school to watch the coverage unfold.

2002 Bali Bombings:
Can't remember, probably watched the life feed on the news for hours though.

Princess Diana died:
as above

Your clubs last premiership:
At home watching it on TV. Wasn't really a footy supporter back then so it really meant nothing to me.

Cathy Freeman lighting the torch:
At home having a bbq with family/friends.

Kevin Sheedy sacked:
Couldn't care less

Steve Waugh/Shane Warne retired:
Waugh - can't remember. To young. As for Warnie, sitting at home devastated. Favourite player at the time.

Osama Bin Laden killed:
At school, it was the conversation topic of the day, making Osama jokes.

Saddam caught:
At my grandparents place, was watching the news.

Port Arthur Massacre:
Too young to remember. Though I would assume I was watching it on the news thinking "WTF is this?" unawares of how major the event was.

- steve waugh/shane warne retired?

My main memory is of Waugh's four off the last ball of the day. Was driving to see my Auntie and Uncle with my brother with the stereo cranked up taking in every ball. We must have looked like two maniacs to the other drivers not listening to the cricket.

Specifically remember Cathy lighting the flame because a drunken teenage Bunk was watching it on the couch at a mates party whilst engaging in some epic touchy feely and slobbery tongue action with a chick from school who id fancied for months.

Life was simple, my friends. Life was good.

A few of those moments are not that memorable for me so I left them out.

the Twin Towers collapsed?

Was school holidays in Tas and we flew to Melbourne very early that day and only saw it when we turned the tv on at Dad's place in Melbourne, probably for the best! I remember that Ansett collapsed at the same time and we didn't know if the flights back the next week were still going to be ok.

Princess Diana died?

Playing junior soccer and heard it on the radio in the car on the way home.

port arthur massacre in 1996?

At a mates place, I remember his dad going off about it. I was in primary school at the time and we had a school excursion there later in the year which was quite watered down compared to what my friends older siblings had done on the same trip. I remember as little kids everyone was spewing about it at the time
