Where will the Bombers finish this year?

I am amazed at the amount of people that would consider a 9th/10th finish satisfactory. If we fail to make finals this year we want 30 delistings and a new coaching team. Even if lloyd and Hird manage only 10 games between them we have a solid enough list to be playing finals.

There is a possibility of anything happening. We could be top 4 or we could be wooden spooners. It all comes down to form and injuries. Collingwood in 2006 are the perfect example. They have one of the worst lists going around but they finished 5th by the end of the H&A season on the back of having next to no injuries and getting some crunching wins early on over weaker sides that really got their confidence up. In my opinion, we need to win at least 2 of our first 3 games and one of them has to be a big win.

Actually we have half our list that is still in development stage so i cant see how you could say we should be delisting a heap of players if we dont make the finals. You have to face reality , we have 5 or 6 players on the list that shouldnt be there, a few older players who are winding down not firing up and a large number of kids who still need 1,2 or 3 years to develop into consistant players.

The majority of our top 22 have been in the system for 4 years or more, add to that a number of fringe players have had the same timeframe and its time to standup and deliver.

Name a better forward line in the comp?

Name a better backline outside of WA?

These guys have the ability and have now had the opportunity. Are you that untrusting in your team your making excuses for failure before we even start?

That's Sheedyism, the positive spin.

Michael aside, Essendon's forward and backline has been the same for the last 2 years and the mainstays are getting older. Neither are Essendon's major weakness, it's the midfield that needs an infusion of talent and time for it to develop. Those Italian and Aborigine boys are all gone now and their replacements are neither of the same quality nor have had the time to develop. Ant's post is realistic and sensible.

Forget about the forward or backline. It's all about the guys that have been in the system for 3-5 years - Winderlich, Monfries, Cole, Dyson, Laycock, Nash, Johns, Lovett, Lovett-Murray, Slattery.

If these guys can step up then we can play finals and be a good side. If these players fail then we'll have to wait for the next batch ( Jetta, Houli, Dempsey..) to take over.

It's a simple as that.

So far we know Monfries, Lovett and Lovett-Murray can play and should keep improving.

The others have the big question mark against them.

There would only be 1/2 a dozen teams in the league with a better midfield than ours if we name our bets side instead of going on our old best team. Houli is a walkin to our midfield given the other talents. Watson is the new Scotty West, Stanton is a solid, consistent contributor. Monfries and Lovett will add pace and slick skills. And then theres that Hird bloke. give guys like Welsh and McVeigh a runout from defense put JJ and MJ on the bench give Pev and Heff there marching orders and we are fine.

Houli is a great talent (better then Dempsey at the same time), but you need stability and a lot of experience around the young guys to help bring them through.

So it is unlikely to see all the young guns running around at the same time, and you will see a very similar midfield to last seasons (which doesn't thrill me).

To put it really simply we need to improve by 9 wins to make the finals. To start with how many times has a side improved by 9 wins to make the finals? or improved by 9 wins for that matter. Yes we have a fit Lloyd and we have Mal Micheal but do they equate to 9 wins alone ? Lloyd will more than likely kick 80 goals but Lucas isnt likely to kick 70 from CHF this year. Our forward line matchs up evenly with a number of other sides.
Our defence is still a grey area. Fletch is Fletch , we know we good a good preformance 90% of the time with him. Mal should be good but there is still a question mark over him as far as getting back to his best form. McVeigh is solid enough as a small defender. McPhee needs to find his 2004 form so there is a question mark on him. Lovett-Murray keeps improving but he also has to find more consitancy. A number of the young blokes are unproven so i dont think we have a defence that other teams currently worry about.
Then we have our midifeld which contains a few guys who are getting to the end and a lot of unproven young blokes. Stanton and Watson are solid enough. JJ still has something to offer but Campo,Heff and Pev are getting to the stage where if all of them are in the side we will struggle. Winderlich is looking good this pre season but has to prove he can do it week in and week out. Dyson still has question marks and so do a couple of others.
I look at our list and see that this year is still about rebuilding. If a few players start to shine we may go further but i see 2008 and 2009 as years we are more likely to play finals.

You are correct in saying you wont see all the younger draftees at once but the midfield wont be totally the same as last year. Lovett and Monfries will both play bigger roles and Winderlich has looked like he will step up a little. It sgould look a bit faster than it has in the past.

we can't expext any of our draftees to slide straight into the midfield

don't forget that houli probably won't play this week and that is with jj and campo out of the equation. he still has a bit of work to do to break into our best 22.

i hope sheeds plays bradley, great player to watch and will be a big part of essendon for the future!!

I wouldn't want him at Essendon now,
great footy player but a lost cause..

He will never be dropped by the Eagles..
he will be on the list untill he cleans up his act..thank god.

Disappointed that Sheedy would even consider picking him up,
knowing that he is a drug user.

We must be pretty desperate still...
Are you kidding you would be silly not to try and get to our club. Same thing happened to a few of our players with grog and they get over and offer the club alot of good things.:p

I agree mate no excusses this year we have a team that should be playing finals. If not time to say goodbye to sheedy and give gary odonnell a go.:D
