Eddie mcguire today gave the first indication that maybe the gf will be moved.

do you think its going to skip wa and go to sydney?

Will nsw crowd regulations allow them to use their 80k ground to capacity?

Will their states rules suit the afl better? If wa still has closed borders to victoria will that influence things?

will the afl wait and see whos more likely to be in a gf before deciding?? If gws are in it - it would be a great opportunity to showcase the game in sydney? Tbh if they could get the crowd limit lifted to capacity it would be a sensational thing for footy to have gws win a gf in nsw.

If the crowds arent allowed to attend then perth is the next biggest venue with (currently) no crowd restrictions so 60k

heres what eddie said :

<<Collingwood president Eddie McGuire has said Western Australia will have to “buy” the AFL Grand Final if they want to hold it there in 2020.

With Victorian crowds looking less and less likely this year given another spike in COVID-19 cases, Optus Stadium in Perth is set to hold 60,000 patrons as soon as Round 7, leading to some calls for it to host this year’s decider.

McGuire, who played a part in brokering the deal that keeps the MCG as host of the Grand Final until at least 2057, said it was not that straight forward.

“If they were prepared to buy it (they may be able to host), because don’t forget the Victorian government have shelled out a fair bit of money to keep the Grand Final at the MCG,” he told Channel Nine.>>>

now im a little confused??

say wa were to pay, would they be required to - like victoria did.... upgrade some west australian sports grounds on behalf of other sports as well as football?

or should wa offer extra flights to other states fans and extra training slots on optus but never deliver on our promise?

Or do we have to do (and not do) both of them?

these are the questions on everyones lips

There’s no ‘skipping’ WA - NSW will be the second choice.

‘it’s bigger for a start, and plans to switch to rectangular are shelved. The AFL certainly won’t get into any ‘highest team home game precedent’
What if nsw has still got social distancing?

also theres a risk that nsw - having not closed the borders to vic, could have a second wave and lockdown.

Theres a shitload of things to ponder.

and you are right i think - the afl arent getting into a highest ranking team hosting situation- making fairness a precedent would go against everything they stand for.

Of course it should be held in Perth. If it can't be held in Australia's biggest stadium then it should be held in Australia's best stadium.
Plus the time zone works best, can have a daytime GF that is live into Melbourne prime time tv.

Ideally?
1) Adelaide - good surface, only 10k less capacity than Perth which is reasonable, good Timezone to give flexibility to the start time
2) Perth - surface has had issues but isn’t too bad, slightly bigger capacity than Adelaide, but s**t Timezone (especially in october) limits how late the game can start to avoid possible heat problems.
3) Sydney - good Timezone and biggest capacity of the 3. But an abortion of a stadium, maintained specifically for rugby, which does not transfer well to football.

LOL...We're told by victorians ad nauseam that Optus is way to small, needs AT LEAST another 20 thousand to even get an imaginary look in, yet now a smaller capacities a better option...GOLD....never change victoria!

Guys can want all you want . It’s reported the AFL has enquired about NSW as an option. Which is still contingency anyway, it’s five months away. That’s like someone predicting now back in january

I mean if you had an extra 20k capacity you be 20k below the MCG... within reason is the key. You’re not sacrificing nearly half the crowd for a ground that is no better.

Manchester United, Juventus,
Obviously the capacity at AO is a bit of a drawback but it’s the best surface in the country and has the added bonus of the hotel at the ground being completed by September. Both teams could base themselves at the ground
It will be in Sydney though unfortunately due to capacity even though the surface is horrid
