News Grand Final at the Gabba - Formerly: Where will this years grand final end up if victoria cant have crowds?

You get the sense that the AFL is not enamored with the SA and WA state governments hard stance on borders and quarantines, and because of that QLD/NSW are probably front runners to host the GF this year.

Ironically, the AFL may not have a choice. I could see the AFL implementing a bye between round 17 and finals and then Optus hosting a "final series" where all 8 teams hub it up in WA.

Optus might just Bradbury a Grand Final if things keep going the way they are!

No one got the message in NSW

Krispy Kreme giving out freebies. Mass gathering, like you wouldn't believe.

you reap what you sow

GF in Sydney allows the AFL to grow the game in the northern expansion markets - you know that will be the number 1 factor in determining where the GF is held.
Yeah that's what the talking heads in the AFL media keep saying, but is it really going to turn many rugby fans into AFL fans? Just one of those things that sounds good when you say it, but really probably doesn't hold much footing in reality. The AFL go and lock in the grand final at the G for the next 50 odd years, tell the other mad footy states "sorry guys, better luck next time", then as soon as a prime opportunity actually arises to share it around to WA or SA, they'd rather play it somewhere with a less suitable stadium in a state that couldn't really care less. All of a sudden, surprise surprise the AFL want to have their cake and eat it too and now use it as an exercise to "grow the game" in a state that likely wouldn't even fill the stadium unless you heavily discounted the tickets. That would be a complete farce.

it should be Perth or Adelaide, two proper football states, isn’t that a no brainer?

The A/VFL won’t want to go down that path because it might actually do really well both on TV and at the ground, it will open up the discussion ‘why can’t we do this more often’?

They would rather stick it in a non football state because they simply won’t care too much either way.
This 100%.

Every knob in Victoria that has ever had something to do in the AFL in the past 70 years will campaign for the Grand Final to not be in Adelaide or Perth. They'd rather see the competition get scrapped for 2020 than risk the Grand Final being a success in Adelaide or Perth.

WA certainly has the best stadium, and on current projections will allow a crowd.

but the 14 day quarantine. Can people see it’s a deal breaker with the way finals are run? You can’t predict which two teams will be in the finals?

the comment back on that is that if things improve elsewhere, the requirement may be eased. But if things improve elsewhere, then the game may well be played elsewhere.

If things don’t improve, the whole finals might be in a hub. It will be one state with two stadiums and still quite strong restrictions on the teams

How about an entire finals series in Perth?

Can have 3 games in Perth in round 17 and implement a bye between R17 and Finals in order for teams to quarantine.

Of, course, why not. But other places may not have the quarantine and the premier saying ‘our quarantine will be stricter than xxxx’ isn’t helpful Good for keeping infection out of the state though)

Tend to agree.

I think there are other states and Premiers who leadership is more a consensus building style and they are willing to find ways to make it work. WA and to a lesser degree SA are far more "my way or the highway" and that way of working would work against them in their bid to host the GF.

The issue with holding the finals series in just one state is taking the interstate teams issues with the Grand Final and spreading it over 4 weeks is it not?

We are talking about doing it for one year in response to a pandemic, not 40 years.

I'm starting to think a finals hub, not matter what state (except Victoria) is the best way to go.

We don't know what cases are going to look like across different states, and we don't know how state governments will respond to outbreaks in other states.

Putting aside my previous point (the answer to the question was yes btw) then we'd probably need to hold it in a state with multiple grounds for games.

Like Queensland.

Possibly,

But you could have it in a state with one ground.

Nah.

Queensland makes much more sense.

You’d think come he’ll or high water it will be played at the MCG.
The A/VFL won’t want to go down that path because it might actually do really well both on TV and at the ground, it will open up the discussion ‘why can’t we do this more often’?

Why would one think 'hell or high water' it will be played at the g?

Why would HQ be averse to 'it doing really well both on the tv and the ground', and if it would why would they be averse to opening up the discussion?

HQ is all about the $ right? If so your logic is inconsistent with that view.

Or another way of looking at it would be seeing the disadvantage of 30 years of grand finals clearly now that they get a taste

If hq is all about $ lets play a game of jeopardy:

for $0 where did adelaide play west coast on the weekend?

hq is only about $ when it suits their argument.

So Brisbane, Port and GWS get shafted to appease WA fans?

Nah. Play it at Queensland.

Logically it makes sense to not put all finals on one ground and have the surface cactus by the Grand Final.
