If players were able to see how much time they had left before the siren, then tonight's game wouldn't have been completely ruined.

I was at that game, and I did not hear the siren at any stage in that last quarter. It was only about 20 seconds after he marked the ball that everyone in our section realised the game was over. It adds to the theatre of the match.
