I agree that "respect" or acknowledgement may come after a comprehensive win over Hawthorn or Collingwood. I also think that considering the utter pasting we got in the PF last year, our victory, but more importantly, our ability to stand up to their game-plan, showed me we had progressed enormously in a very, very short time. That's why I'm so "bullish". We have a long ways to go to September, but we sit 9-0!
Collingwood are building as well, but they're not re-inventing the wheel.
Probably natural we all feel a bit miffed that our achievements this season haven't been talked up in the "Meeja" , damn fine effort to be where we are considering the departures , ageing list etc etc . I also think we have to acknowledge that it's a sexier story for the majority to report on our decline rather than our re-emergence. Just look at the column inches devoted to the Saints for proof of that.
CS mentioned OTC that we are striking a fine balance between youth and experience in challenging again this season. I am not underestimating the task of beating the Pies when it counts but it is always harder to improve when you are the best , compared to the challengers who can see where they need to be. If we can hold our existing strengths together and remedy our KPF situation at the right time we are in with a chance.

Certainly Hawks seem to be media darling 2nd fav but I find it astonishing that a team that actually has no back-line and a passable at best ruck division could be considered a viable flag threat. Carlton with a fit Kreuzer are much more likely imo.
I am more excited by our defensive mindset and our ability to grind out games and wins even when we are blooding new players, learning a new game plan and cobbling together a forward line.
If, and it's a big if, we can get a KPF to stand up, we will be very, very dangerous.
CHF is our only real achilles heel atm.

Back line doesn't look good on paper but as they say on Total Footy it's been splod so far this year.

Should the Hawks be 2nd favorites may be not but still in with a big chance IMHO.

To be fair, the hawks won a flag in 08 with no backline and a servicable ruck division

any team with a Franklin in the side is capable of beating anyone. Like some of the best before him, he only needs a quarter of footy to turn a game. We've seen the Magpies best at the start of the season but yet to really see the Cats, Hawks, Saints or Dogs at their blistering best just yet. And yep Stevie J, Pods, Hawkins, Mooney not troubling the scoring tally & Byrnes still to come into the side proves we are improving still.

I agree, Im still scared of Hawthorn in a final what is it with them??..

It'll need to be splodier in September when the heats on :thumbsu:

Yes but up until 1/2 time of the GF they at least had Croad to base it around.
Also Crawford's loss has been monumental imo.

Think you know exactly what categorically means in this context, but if you must, to beat these teams without the" just got over the line" look about it. An impressive Pies like performance against WCE, Hawks against Saints, Saints against Freo, that is all. When our own coach keeps coming out and (modestly), ( accurately) saying we have been lucky and could be 6-2, or 5-3, it feeds fuel to the fire.

BTW, I'd be rapt with a 1 point win every week, as long as my heart stood up to it, and as long as it occurs in the GF. But we are talking perception of greatness warranting respect by whoever.

I grant that we 'just got over the line' against the Saints; to me, the wins against the Hawks and the Pies were much closer to your 'categorical' class than the scorelines indicated.

For anybody following the flow of those games I think you'd be hard-pressed not to concede that the hoops showed they can match it with both the media-darlings of 2011.

Anyway, I (like you) don't mind if the 'categorical' win never eventuates...just keep chalking up the unconvincing wins, boys. :thumbsu:

I don't get it.

We were deemed to be 'too old and too slow' by many at the start of the season but have gone on to win 10 games straight so far, albeit we were lucky a couple of times, yet we're still not receiving widespread respect??

Listening to the sycophantic commentary last night about Collingwood still being the team to beat and everyone else being in awe of them you'd be forgiven for thinking they were the undefeated team of the year so far.

I don't want the same fawning commentary over the Cats, but how about just a little respect, even if begrudging, for their achievements so far given we were dismissed at the start of the season and forecast to plummet down the ladder?

These commentators are sick of us and a little peeved and embarrassed that we will not die as expected. We have exceeded everybody's expectations, mine definitely, and non-Cat fans and commentators are just outright annoyed.

True. Carlton is the other one we "pinched", and they look the real deal.

" Geelong's period of domination is over " .... oops...

we have lost one game since that Tim Lane gem....what an embarrassment for him, and a few others. Let's face it, what can they say???

When did he say that?
Might be 2 losses if it was the Dogs game, or was it the prelim? Anyway, I agree with your point.

Two actually, but I understand where you're coming from.

Had to laugh last night when Huddo mentioned to him that he had tipped Geelong to miss the eight, and Tim Lane had no other choice but to admit he'd stuffed up there.

I have a mental block over the St Kilda loss  :D
