For all the Hird haters, who do you have in front of him from that era?
im sure there is plenty.

Apparently he was never that good and couldn't kick well.
a Brownlow, Norm Smith, 5x AA's, 5 BnF's, 2 time club leading goal kicker, and Hall of Fame member is your run of the mill footballer.

Stop being over dramatic.

This thread isn't about Hird being a good footballer, which he certainly was.

It is about being the BEST midfielder of the last 30 odd years, there's plenty of others just as worthy with just as impressive a resume.

Hird never won an AFL MVP, in 96' in his brownlow year McKernan went in favourite and should of shared it with him, McKernan won the MVP that year as well.

Compare that to GAJ, who has 5 x AFL MVP's and should probably have 4 brownlows. He still has 2, also an 8 x AA.

Dangerfield is a 5 x AA, brownlow medalist and 1 x AFLPA MVP, Fyfe is a 2 x AA, 2 x AFLPA MVP, brownlow medalist at 26 years of age and is getting shit canned in this thread.

Relax.

The fact that Judd, cousins, Kerr could more than hold their own in this discussion, shows how ridiculous that midfield was.

Yeah, you lost it by including Kerr.
Judd is clearly in this top group.
Cousins is in the next group down alongside a lot of other great midfielders who just arent in this discussion.

Kerr is a good length behind anyone who deserves to be mentioned.
If you want to compare them as a midfield, there is a seperate conversation that should be had in another thread. I dont think that lot wins against Brisbanes Voss/Aker/Black/Lappin, but you do if you include Ruckmen.

I think someone calling Hird the best player of the last 30 years is grossly overrating him (I would find it definitely to consider anyone but Carey, Buddy or GAJ), but it is just as ridiculous to not include him in the group with Voss, Buckley and Ricciuto.
How you rate those 4 is completely up for debate.
I personally think Voss trumps them all and I cant ever wipe 02/03 from my memory - with Buckley/Hird interchangeable (though I'm biased so would clearly take Bucks) and Roo slightly behind.

I also have no problem with making it a top 5 to including Robert Harvey alongside them.
I would have a problem with anyone who says any of the other 4 were significantly below Harvey.

Agree about the generation, you could almost argue a third set of three to make it more about generation:

Hird, Voss, Buckley

Judd, Goodes, GAJ

Fyfe, Danger, Dusty

In that split i'd probably take the middle generation just slightly before the older guys.
The young group still have time to catch up though.

That’s what I was thinking too - whether it’s Goodes or Swan either way it fits. Didn’t want to name Martin as id probably be accused of trying to bring Richmond into it.

the top 5 is the right way to approach it.
or 6, Carey really belongs in there. Mainly because he was the best of the bunch.

Being quite a fan of lists, my top 10 of AFL players since i really started paying attention around 95;
Carey
Hird
Voss
Roo
Bucks
Ablett
Judd
Lloyd
Buddy
Harvey

Seems odd not to consider KP players, esp two of the best forwards in the AFL era.

Martin has so much of his career left to play, and has only entered his dominant years in the last 24 months.
Too premature to bring him into it.

Yeah fair enough, for mine the midfielders or midfield-esquers are rated as follows:

90's era: Voss/Buckley/Hird...Ricciuto...Harvey
00's era: Judd/Ablett...Goodes...Mitchell/Swan/Cousins
10's era: Danger/Fyfe/Dusty...Pendlebury/Selwood...JPKennedy

Based on that, the 00's win for mine.

EDIT: 20's era: Cripps/Bont/Kelly/Merrett/Crouch/Billings

Cousins is easily as good as hird/Voss/Buckley and many would have him better than those. Kerr is nowhere near as far behind as you are making him out to be, I’d have him only a bit behind Fyfe who is the worst of op. Kerr could’ve been a dual Brownlow medalist if things went right, don’t undersell how brilliant he was.

Lol

Mate I'm a west aussie who has watched plenty of the Eagles over the last 20-30 years.

Your view is laughably biased.

No way Collingwood win the flag without him, and arguably Ross Lyon benching him in the GF vs the Cats is part of the reason the Saints lost. Criminally underrated, number three out of him Hodge and Judd, but worthy of having his name mentioned in the same sentence.

Let's all just make up a group of 3 good players that played together

Linked this before, can't resit.
