I disagree.

There's a reason Melbourne led so many important stats in 2018, such as contested ball, contested ball differential, inside 50s, inside 50 differentials, time in forward half, centre clearances, marks inside 50, most points scored, score assists.

The work Oliver does at the coalface led to Melbourne being number one in many of these important metrics. He's the one giving first use to the Sidebottoms of the AFL world. Sidebottom had the most handball receives in 2018, so he had a great year, but give me the Oliver or Cripps types getting it to him.

There's a few reasons Collingwood made it into the gf after easily defeating the red hot favourites in the pf, the Collingwood pair were a pretty large reason.

Melbourne got smashed in the pf, Gawn did nothing and Oliver had 5 kicks. They were probably as effective as the Collingwood pair were in the gf.

dont use Brownlow finish as an arguement. Brayshaw finished second and both he, Laird and Steven finished above Grundy. Do you also think those players had a better year than Grundy?

The counter argument would be the coaches voted Oliver to have had the superior years in both 17 & 18 but that could be somewhat floored too. Just less so than the Brownlow

Grundy for me is the best ruck in the league, but it's not a huge difference between him and Gawn, and they are close enough in age that they both have 5+ good years left.

However Sidebottom is 28 and probably isnt going to improve from here, while Oliver is only 21 and from this group is probably the one who hasn't reached his best years and has the most improvement left in him.

While Grundy is the best of the 4 imo, you get more years from gun players out of the Melbourne duo, so it's better for the long term.

Tough call, even in 2019.
