Ottens on the hand... a whole lot of promise but delivers nothing. Much like the team he plays for.

We'd be mad to trade Brett for that plodder.

We wouldn't, burton is a better long term prospect for either team.
it's starting to sound like it is ottens who wants to come back and if so i dont think we would be over the top generous again.
and who knows away from the tigers maybe he could realise some of that potential? (i mean kane was a good player here but an ok player there)

Yep he runs all day like a headless chook, yep he accumulates disposals by going kick chasing and his disposal hurts his team more than it does the opposition, yep he kicks goals when he plays forward, yep he takes marks but also drops a lot of the ones that he shouldn't drop, yep awsome leap.

Ottens on the other hand, has a pretty big engine for a 200 cm bloke, also accumulates disposals (not as many as Burton but he does use them better), kicks goals just as well as Burton, takes marks and provides an extra player in general field play.

One is a ruckman the other is a dime a dozen athlete who can run all day and jump high.

While he has underachieved, Ottens is still a better footballer than Burton.

Ottens is the better of the two.
To get Ottens you would have to trade Burton plus a first rounder.
That is a bit much.

He was b4 the back op last year.
and we all know that out of contract players that want to go home,,,,,,,,,well CAN.
most of the time for about half of what they are worth. and if the club they are leaving dont like it,,,,,,,,,well ,,,,,,,,,,,hey did you see that nick stevens was in Carltons best AGAIN.

Or now that he is indispensable he is doing a Ben Holland or Gasper trick.

Nick Stevens will always be in Carlton's best.
I wish he was still at Port ........... not. ;)

As I said earlier we should not trade away our first pick unless we are getting a better one in return.

I would happily trade Burton but there is no way I would trade 1st round pick. I would be happy to trade 1st round pick for someone that a gun and has 10 years of AFL footy ahead of them. Ottens doesn't fall into that category.

You won't get that Stiffy. Why would anyone vouluntarily take a first round draft pick which is a gamble, for someone who is a gun and has ten years in them.

Ottens will be 25 in January next year. That should guarantee 6 to 8 years from a top line player, barring injury, which is a hell of a good return IMO.

Having said that, I don't think there's much chance of it happenening.

Anything is a gamble. Getting Ottens would be a gamble because of his back surgery. I am aware that we won't get a gun that has 10 years left in them for 1st round pick alone but I am just saying that 1st round draft pick should only be used in a scenario where you either improve you 1st round pick or where you get a gun that has 10 years of footy left. Obviously both scenarios 1st round pick alone won't cut it.

Ottens will be 25 in January but I think you are very generous if you say he has 6-8 years ahead of him. With his history of back trouble and considering he is a ruckman, the best you can expect is around 5 years. Ruckman generally last until they are 30.

AFC should use 1st round draft picks smartly so they get value for them that will help their team for next 8-10 years. We did a great job in th elast draft when we got Watts and we all expect him to play for us until he is at least 30. Thats value for money. I would rather us use that pick on someone who will provide us with 10 years by drafting well than use it on Ottens who has 5-6 years left.

Just my 2 cents worth.

After reading this I have decided Burton would be better off as an Olympic Pole Volter;)

Brad Ottens is leading the comp for hit outs at present and he can go forward and kick goals.

I'd take him in a heartbeat in a straight swap for Burton.

Haven't changed my opinion on Ottens, but given everyone thinks he's an underachiever, here's some info.
Reported in the papers on the weekend; ottens clearly leads the AFL with 203 tapouts, Clarke is 3rd with 173.
Ottens leads the league ruckman with centre clearances.
Not bad stats for an underachiever?

Given that, still wouldn't trade our first round pick, and a player for him, as someone suggested.
Would I trade Burton and a second round pick, yes I would.

Spot on. That has been my point all along. We shouldn't trade away 1st round pick for anyone. It should be untouchable.

Do we have any idea of how strong the draft will be this time around though?

After Collingwood take the remaining 27 Shaws and 63 Clokes on offer will there be anyone left?

Early indications are that this draft should be of good quality and has some some good depth when it comes to talls.

Was having a look at few stats in yesterday's Sunday Herald Sun and it was rating the ruckman for 2004 thus far Ottens was at No 1 with 283 hitouts this season so far,Matty Clarke was at No 3.

I think if we can do the right deal we need to go after Ottens;)

So far this season Ottens averages:

13.5 possesions per game, 5.625 marks per game, 28.5 hitouts per game, 2.75 tackles per game.

Those are pretty good stats for a ruckman. He is also a pretty good set shot for goal.

Burton averages:

Clangers: 17.8
Speccy attempts: 6.5
Hard ball gets: 0.1
