Forgotten the derby already? :)

Other than due to COVID, our last home crowd under 20k was in 1989.

Went and looked through the Eagles' attendances. Even sub-25K hasn't happened since 2000.

Collingwood are already reaching that during their first season of being terrible. Richmond had a handful like that in 2014 before they were consistently good.

How many at the Tigers match today?

Less than 20,000 as the home team (excluding 2020)

West Coast
  • Several games between 1987-1989 at Subiaco Oval and the WACA.
  • Nothing under 20,000 since then.
Collingwood
  • Never got under 20,000 at the MCG. The closest was 20,320 against Fremantle in 2016.
  • Just one game under 20,000 at Marvel (2016 vs Gold Coast = 17,644).
  • Less than 20,000 at Victoria Park was against West Coast in 1999.
Richmond
  • Under 20,000 multiple times at the MCG as the home team, which last happened in 2010 against Adelaide.
  • Under 20,000 at Marvel on two occasions = 2003 vs Port Adelaide (15,920) and 2021 vs GWS (18,798)

Wait... Richmond had less than 20,000 at their game in Melbourne today - where were their other 80k members?

Oh, I forgot: pets can't go to games

Vic teams have more games in their city though. It’s rarer for Perth.
But any way you slice it there’s 2.1 m in Perth for two teams and 5.3 m for Melb teams and Geelong

To further add.

Bombers compare favourably against Collingwood & Richmond I think?

Essendon
Excluding the year Essendon lost its players to suspension (x 2, 2016), lowest home crowd since 1997 - 23,705 (Marvel V Port Power 2015).

Don’t know how you go back further however wouldn’t be many prior to 1997 unless at Windy Hill / Princes Park

Essendon have never had under 20,000 at the MCG. Lowest it's had is 20,453 against the Brisbane Bears in 1993.

Correct on the Marvel crowd numbers.

Got a few under 20,000 at Windy Hill in the late 80s/early 90s.

What part of the present tense don't you understand?

Essendon compare favourably if you go back more than 6,000 days

Let us know when you catch up

Or win 4 in a row

Or 3 in a row

Or 2 in a row twice

Just kidding, that's 4 in a row
well, yes, great side, my point was there are literally a handful of 105-110 year olds left living in Victoria who would remember a time when Pies fans got accustomed/potentially complacent about winning.

Not sure what that has to do with the OP, but OK

Living in WA west coast is just huge in terms of supporters. If they had a 100k stadium in Perth they would be up near the top or on top for attendance. Collingwood will be 2nd because of supporters around Aus is higher. Tigers I would not consider 3rd that will be Essendon. Tigers may have 100k members but their support is not that big beyond the members they have and a few K probably are 2nd team members.

I think it's fairly simple.
Collingwood and Essendon have always been the biggest Melbourne clubs since Essendon moved away from Windy Hill in the 90s.
Richmond enjoyed a boost from the premierships, but we're now seeing it return back to how it always was.
If Essendon won a premiership and moved to the MCG, it wouldn't be a debate.

Home attendance average since 1997

Collingwood - 50,000
Essendon - 46,434
Richmond - 42,697

West Coast don't have the national support Essendon and Collingwood have so it's difficult to say who is bigger.

Odd year to start the count.
Do you have the numbers for, say, the last 5 or 10 years?

In any case, I'd say the answer to the OP is West Coast.
