Yes but according to the Morgan Gallup poll immediately prior to last years federal election, Labor was *actually* going to have a 17 percentage point swing to it, and Kim Beazley should be our PM at the moment.
This is the problem with quantifying who is the biggest club.
Do you take the number of supporters (as Morgan's have attempted)?
Do you take the number members (including cats and dogs)?
Do you take average attendances?
Agree on a methodology (ha!) and then you may find an answer!

This is the point though.
The first group gets the majority of the media attention on a national scale.
The second group gets the majority of the audience attention on a national scale.
Why is there a discrepancy?

But Sydney probably has the most unfulfilled potential and could join that group. Its a case of when - or whether - it will get there. A lot depends on a media that is interested in truly growing the game in the country's biggest city rather than trying to find reasons to belittle the city's enthusiam whenever it can and failing to recognise that the challenges faced by any team in Sydney are currently different to those faced by all other teams (other than the Lions).

You'd say at this point in time its Essendon, Collingwood, Adelaide and West Coast, but I'm sure that the AFL would love it to be Brisbane, Sydney, West Coast and Adelaide. That way they would have a huge market share in the main 5 cities in Australia.

i wouldn't be surprised that sydney are the most popular but of that group i would question if they are actually AFL supporters.

I would think that the AFL sees Brisbane and Sydney being just as important as the big Victorian four.
Someone listed the attendences for crowds against clubs from out of town.
Essendon and Adelaide's average attendances were near to the 40,000.
Collingwood and West Coasts were near the 35,000.
All the others were a long way below that

Clear ranking is difficult, but considering the factors of average home attendances, average away attendances, popular support (ie non members), members, financial strength, then at present the rank would sit:
Equal 1st: Collingwood/Essendon/Adelaide
Equal 4th: West Coast/Sydney
Equal 6th: Hawthorn/Port/Carlton
Equal 9th: Richmond/Geelong/Melbourne/Brisbane
Equal 13th: Fremantle/St.Kilda
Equal 15th: Western/North
Movers (in last five years):
Hawthorn up two tiers (5 to 3)
Port up two tiers (5 to 3)
Sydney up one tier (3 to 2)

The Crows apparently have a huge support base, its a shame they dont get to showcase it like Carlton, Essendon and the Pies do every year
And the Big 4 is a Victorian term, interstate teams need not worry about being left out
Hawthorn is probably unlucky to miss out

Hawks have a large membership but so do Melbourne if you include MCC members.
Not huge crowd pullers but have had their moments.
I'm in the IT section of a large consultancy firm and the hawks fans outnumber any other in our section. There are currently no essendon fans.

How could I not include Crows?
Biggest membership. Probably the club which draws the largest number to games. (Note this is different to crowds at games, I'm talking about the number drawn by each particular club). Second or third biggest supporter base. Second or third most profitable.
How could I leave such a club out?
