I have recently noticed the amount of sooking by coaches has become almost unbearable. The leaders so far in my view are Mark Williams,Leigh Mathews and Danny Frawley:D

Sheeds is more a constructive sooker though i reckon he doesnt sook about meaningless things. He tries to make the game better through sooking

Hve to go with the crowd here, Sheeds is a real sook, but a constructive sook, and boy doesn't he do it well?!

Have to agree with Windyhill though, Carlton are always having a sook. Not their coach though, their president more like it.

Ummm....I think that's a bit off the topic windy.

As for Carlton always having a sook, well I've never seen Wayne Brittain have a sook, unlike all the other 15 coaches. There's no way Carlton are more of a sook club than any other.

The master sook had to be malthouse when he was at the weagles, no one will ever come close to him, fortunately he has improved since being with the pies.

Good to see that people recognise Sheedy's sooking as constructive. I remember in the 80s he was the only coach complaining about the 2 man interchange bench - nobody else backed him up on wanting more players, and he really did look like a whinger. But he finally managed to get the bench up to 4 players, and don't you reckon every coach in the league is happy about that now.

I think that David Parkin should get a mention for his "the AFL should do something about the time wasting tactic", when Essendon players chipped the ball around to each other against Carlton. Ever heard of 'manning up' Parko?

I reckon Terry Wallace is a bloody whinger too. Every week he's telling us how tough it is for the Bulldogs and how it's 'us versus them' all the time.
It's wearing bloody thin Terry.

That's interesting Santos,

Every week on either Thursday or Friday I would log onto the AFL website and on the update session you would read Mark William's praising Ports upcoming opponents and saying how much respect they have for them.

The week Port played the Bulldogs, he came out attacking the club for the very reason you mentioned, saying the "us against them" mentality is old and tiresome.

We don't have a coach. ;) Of course when we do sign Thomas, I'll be very interested in seeing how he reacts to the media considering the personal attacks he has received from them. I'd ban Patrick Smith but somehow I think Grant Thomas is too big a person to stoop to that level.

Grant Thomas has impressed me greatly with his attitude to the media.

He has ignored all the crap that was written about him, and been very professional in his approach.

One thing that annoys me is when coaches criticize the umpiring. It's almost as if some coaches legitimately believe that the umpires are biased aganst them. In my opinion, they should just accept that umpiring mistakes are a variable that cannot or will not change. Umpires all make mistakes, and over the course of time it evens out.

My point is, that when Grant Thomas was asked about some dubious umpiring that effected St.Kilda and cost them a few goals he replied by saying : "The umpires have a very difficult job to do, and they do it to the best of their ability"

I loved that response and I wish other coaches would be more diplomatic in regards to "perceived" injustices against their team.

Sainter, it was that comment which opened my eyes to Terry Wallace. Jack Cahill and the Port Magpies used to use that tactic all the time with great success because we had the team to back it up. The Bulldogs don't have the required talent to carry an 'us against them' mentality for the whole season. It was one time where I thought Williams got it 100% right.
I'll also be interested to see how Thomas reacts once he feels 'safe' as senior coach.

Good point Dan

I noticed that. The fact that he wouldn't make any excuses for our losses and wouldn't tolerate losing was something that I expect to hear from a senior coach. A lot of the little things have impressed me about him too. The way he stood back and let the players have their moment in the sun after we beat Hawthorn in round 22 was something that said a lot about him.

What is he like as a senior coach?

Who knows.

Good luck Grant, you've got a lot of work to do. :)

Santos,

I don't know much about Port's history but I did suspect that perhaps Mark Williams wanted that kind of mentality kept for his own team. It sure has worked in the past.

On the bulldogs, I reckon 2001 was a transition year for them. They've probably played more kids this year than for the last three years combined. Maybe that kind of tactic we're talking about is starting to wear thin. I've got to say I admire what they've achieved and I'm interested to see how both Wallace and Pagan go now that their successful teams are in the midst of blooding more youngsters and are not playing finals football.

Sainter, I would hope for the Bulldogs sake that he makes a couple of decent trades that work this season. The Cameron and Montgomery trades have been shockers.
I definitely think the 'us against them' tactic has it's merits, but would wear thin as a constant source of motivation.

Depends on your definition. He wouldn't attend press conferences last year when Carlton lost, that's what I'd call a sook.

The problem with that idea is that unlike in the SANFL, Port Adelaide are not a hated club for most other AFL supporters, they're still having an underdog/new boy honeymoon.

Santos

Although you could regard them as shockers, we did get some good youngsters with the draft picks we recieved from that trade!

So lets what and see cause Eagle is only 23 and hopefully he will pull his finger out soon :p
