Issue could be structural as well. Even before the payouts, it seems clear that we don't resource the main coaching group to the extent that our competitors do. It's unlikely we've ever spent the full cap, but either way, I don't think it's going to the right places. That's the disappointing bit about Kelly, he's never seen the inside of an AFL footy dept, so it's harder for him to identify wastage. Hopefully he's shrewd enough to realise that it's highly unlikely that structure he inherited doesn't require a complete overhaul.

We do spend the footy cap, it doesn't just go on coaches, it covers the entire football department. We added extra costs in by bringing Kangatech in, which then added another cost when we brought Saunders in because our guys misused it completely. We've also invested more in analytics than most other teams have also.

You can certainly argue about the allocation of funds, what we're spending isn't the issue but where we are spending it could definitely be the problem. Do you need Saunders if you have competent fitness staff to start with? Maybe not. Did we need to pay ROK previously to be a SANFL coach AND have Heath Younie managing him on top of that? We added Godden in as an extra coach (at the time) last year, you'd question why you need another coach just to work under another assistant (Godden reported directly to Campo, not Pyke).

But he's a good guy and you want good people involved in your footy club. Doesn't matter if they're good coaches though.

New fitness coach, new forward coach, new midfield coach and probably a proper 2IC would do me fine. Take a hit on the luxury tax if you have to and treat that as an investment for the next decade.

I would be targeting jimmy Bartel. Throw a sh*t tonne at him to get him into the coaching panel.

Bartel, Hodge, Bassett, Caracella, McLeod. Get rid of Hart, Godden, Clarke, Saunders, Haas and our culture officer to pay for it. Get Poulos back or an equivalent fitness specialist.

Get Blight on the board. We need a football person to shake things up. Riccuito, Fagan, Chapman, Reid out. Need another recruiter to help Ogilvie and a list management expert. The guy in Victoria that did power and saints list knows his stuff. Chris Pelchen.

I’m in favor of getting any of these decent coaches as assistants etc

I just think we’re not able to afford many of them, given the COVID financial hit

And if Clarko wants a change he should be on the phone to GWS for a five year deal to get two flags from their talent
