Adelaide tried him permanently in the guts and he ended up in the reserves. Now Nicks has come up with the genius idea of putting him back to a black flank. Think the question on should he be a permanent midfielder has now finally been answered.

He was perfectly adequate in the guts in his first year in Adelaide, and during his final season at Carlton. Played some of his best footy, in fact.

Adequate. That sounds awesome.

"Adequate" understates it.

From 2014-2018, which is supposed to be (for most players) and turned out to be Gibbs' prime (ages 25-29), he averaged:

25.54 disposals (40.36% contested, 1.39 kick-to-handball ratio, 67.72% disposal efficiency, 14.34 turnover rate)
5.12 clearances
4.06 inside 50s
0.71 goals per game
5.34 tackles
81.80% gametime over 98 games
0.44 Brownlow votes per game (43 votes from just 34 wins)

Those are quality numbers and a fine output, inside and all-round. Most players would be pushing for AA selection year in, year out with that level of performance.

The only reason Gibbs' output gets discounted and dismissed and doomed to irrelevancy is because he's a former #1 pick, and he doesn't look "hard" (and got given the "soft" "Bryce Squibs" tag early on), and he didn't play a final during that run. His prime unfortunately also coincided with a lot of injuries and wobbly form to teammates (namely Matthew Kreuzer and Marc Murphy, along with others once he got to the Crows), along with Chris Judd's retirement, so he never saw the team success that was probably expected at some stage either.

At his best (which he's passed now, much sooner than expected, unless he has a big bounce-back in 2020), Gibbs was a very good all-round footballer as a full-time mid.

Non Victorian players are always underrated inside vic
Mundy is a star
Gray at Port
Martin at the Lions
Lloyd at the Swans
Tahlia at the crows
Davis at GWS
Hurn at WCE
If these guys played in Vic they would be talked about being top 10-15 players imo.
Vic players can also be overrated due to pumping teams up becuase they create more media ala Marc Murphy

What a load of rubbish, mundy and hurn and lloyd and brisbanes martin as top 15 players in the comp. are you off your rocker?

Victoria or no victoria has zero influence on average how players are rated overall. Sh** judd was rated better at west coast even though his stats are far superior at carlton.

A lot of those games were played on a back flank.

A lot of those games were played on a back flank.

The vast majority were played in the middle. The consistency of his numbers in all categories in those years shows that, before you even get to the eye test.

Gibbs as a half back/utility was mainly a 2010-2012 thing.

If anything, I reckon many players become overrated based on the notion that they don't play in Victoria. In my time, I've noticed that interstate players are able to avoid scrutiny for flaws, inconsistency etc. because they're not under the spotlight as much as Vic players are.

People often confuse media hype with the general consensus of football fans. Just because a handful of powerful folks in the media like to pump up marketable players, it does not make them overrated.
