Whateley is a knobhead.

He's a bit like Bruce in that he has this childlike obsession with footballers. He's older than most of them and has been for 20 years but has this starry eyed amazement toward them. They both like horses to strangely sexual degrees, too. Bruce is kind of endearing though in a weird way tho.

Whateley meanwhile is a complete fu**head. He has this lilt on his voice that has this addressing tone to it like 'I'm talking very slowly because this is a national address.' His pontificating use of about the same three expensive words is kind of lame too. It's like he should be a flouncing dandy but he isn't. He's just a dickhead. He thinks football and footballers are so amazing and he thinks he's so amazing because he's an analyst of it. The way the Fox cameras swing around when he's chatting too is like that scene in Jaws with the dolly zoom where it goes in and out at the same time.

Dick.

Totally agree. Football is his socialisation tool. And he is shithouse at wielding a spanner.
His supposed upmarket "analysis" is just pure drivel stating and proving nothing insightful or to be remembered.
Has a penchant for little girly temper tantrums too.

He has no footballing insight because he would have been the little geek on the sidelines during lunch time kick to kick, pretending to commentate it. He doesn't understand the way the game is played. Then again Bruce is the same. He says things like 'they've gaaaayyyyyyned ten... they'll be happy with that.' It's not gridiron. You don't gain space. It's not an important calculation.

Whateley's pontification is generally talking up the off-field stories or the personalities. Which can be interesting but not when it's the targets he has.

When you think about it, some spindly geekster and some fatheaded moron who clearly drinks before going on air is about as bad a show as you could get.

Me. Indirectly I suppose...

Back when I was a cadet photographer with the Advertiser, a few (very high profile) Crows players threatened to kill my senior photographer I was following around. I was on the otherside of the road from him when it happened, and it was all over pretty quickly before I could rush over, but I got a few threats my way as it ended. It was big news in Adelaide for a short while. This was back in 2005.

I won't name-names here but it's very easily google-able.

Very true. Both he and Bruce are the savant kids by themselves in the schoolyard who could recite the exact scores of the 1927 grand final.

Why not name names if it's on google? What was the story?

Between Whateley's tone and Robbo's even more infuriating 'proud uncle' tone - the two of them are aural and visual AIDS

There’s a genuineness to McAvaney that is absent most other commentators. Unlike just about everyone in sports commentary these days who wants to push a pet topic or criticise players, he simply calls the game. Even if there is something he doesn’t like, it’s a bit “oh gee, don’t know about that” and then he never mentions it again. He will be sorely missed when he retires.

he veers into self parody often but it's been cometti, daylight, bruce then daylight again before the others can get ranked. Commentates without too much ego, there's a purity and old school approach to him that no one else has in AFL.

Yeah, he's a bit of the harmless sports lover but he never had the natural football knowledge and once-in-a-sport wit of Den.

He makes you cringe sometimes though. He's the sort of bloke who just talks about Daaangerrrr and Fyyyyyfe and the big name players we know. He doesn't especially care about hard working unheralded guys like a Ben Cunnington or some up and coming youngster. I think that's due to his strange interests but also just due to his lack of actual understanding on the sport. He's the sort of guy who talks more about a girlfriend or mum in the crowd than he would a good passage of play.

Whateley, Robbo & Barrett are all flogs of the highest order. Don’t think Hodgey will be having a coffee with Barrett anytime.
Maclure is an absolute moron too. Probably the most bias bloke on fox footy (including Eddie)

If you’re a journo and everyone likes you then you’re not doing you’re job properly.

How anybody likes Ross Lyon is beyond me. Imagine supporting a team he coaches, you’d go to games knowing it’ll be rare if your team kicks 10 goals

Danger certainly did bite kane cornes, that's why he had a go at him last week and turned up to a presser on crutches a few years ago. I don't know why you'd deny it.

Goodes and mcchins had a pretty big feud, going from supposedly great friends to not talking for obvious reasons.

Also pretty sure aker had an ongoing feud with someone but I can't recall who

Currently Jack reiwoldt and Tom Browne had a barney this yeat because Jack called out Browne for making up **** and reporting the results of an injury scan before it even happened.
Lol that’s not a bite. A bite would be giving some sort of impassioned defence of himself. He never did anything of the sort.

Sounds like I’m the only person who likes Whateley here. In an industry filled with spur of the moment journalism and lazy/non existent researching, he does his homework and forms opinions based on it.
Maybe true when 360 started, but now he's just a smug, safe AFL sycophant. Hasn't dared to veer from the HQ agenda for years.
