It would be rather interesting to get your thoughts on that if Melbourne beats Collingwood to eliminate them from the finals with Grundy having a good day at the office, and he is still on speaking terms with the girls in the Collingwood HR Department where he collects part of his total salary each month.
On form it looks like a flop so far. Grundy couldn't get a game with them last year and Melbourne don't look to be a top 2 side.

You'd surely still take the list that is $8 chance at a flag this year and will have almost the same list contending next season (Tuohy retiring, maybe one other) unless there was an absolute chasm in quality for 28s and under. The only veteran that really looks to have fallen off a cliff form-wise (injury rumours but who knows) is Tuohy. Geelong just haven't coped that well leaning into the 23rd-30th players on the list, most of which need more games in the bank to be competitive as a collective.

After 2024 is done we may lose most or all of Danger, Hawkins (who knows with him though), Smith, Blicavs, Duncan, Bews, Stanley and Rohan. So undoubtedly a lot of quality lost, but a lot of cap space too. Ideally a couple of free agents are landed as is the norm and something like:

Cameron, Stewart, C.Guthrie, Parish, Kolo, Stengle, Close, Miers, Holmes, De Koning, Ratugolea, O'Connor, Z.Guthrie, Atkins, Bruhn, Bowes, TDK, Doedee, J.Henry, O.Henry, Clark, Neale, Conway, Dempsey and Knevitt in 2025 would not be a bad list.

Keep in mind they are tied up with Taranto & Hopper which comprises immediate draft selections. It's a significant impediment considering they are already tumbling down the ladder.

We are missing 1 first round draft pick at years end… and we got Hopper into our system a year early.
I’ll back our list management team.
A Few from last years haul might surprise 🤓

Cats already found future players. Not sure they ever become stars but at least you can start building around the likes of De Koning, Holmes, Bruhn, Z.Guthrie, Henry's, Close, Stengle, Simpson.
With free agency, we are also bound to land a couple of big fish before Tasmania enter the league.

Collingwood may not be in the position we're currently in if we still had Grundy on our books.

The ifs/buts/maybes on him (and Treloar) really are moot points...

They certainly will be moot points if one of those players plays well in a winning final to eliminate Collingwood. The whole world will be mooting those points. :)

Hawthorn completely botched their future though.
They are a prime case study of how to get it all wrong.

Geelong are already rebuilding while remaining a contender.
Our forward line and back line is solid.
We are weak in midfield and have no ruck.
Hawthorn were devoid of quality youth in every position across the ground.

Guess what number that one single draft pick is?

And how do you know Hopper will make it. He could break down gradually over the coming years and drift out of the game.
And the player we pick up in the draft could do the same or be an average player at best or have drug/mental health etc issues or want to go back home...

As much as it's possible, Hopper is a known quantity. A player you pick up in the draft always holds more risk.

Oh well, if we're in a position to risk Treloar or Grundy being the difference in a big final, it's better than the alternative which was to keep them and possibly not even be playing finals...

The difference is the Hawks had completely ignored the draft from 2009-2014. Their highest pick in that time was Smith at 19 and they had a total of 3 top 30 draft picks. It was always going to take a miracle for them to be competitive while having no early draftees.

In contrast Geelong just from the 2019-2022 drafts currently have:

De Koning (pick 19)
Holmes (20)
Bruhn (12)
O Henry (17)
Conway (24)
Knevitt (25)
Clark (8)

7 top 25 picks across 4 drafts is a solid base if you pick and develop well. Holmes and SDK look like stars in the making and all of Bruhn, O Henry, Knevitt and Clark look like long-term AFL players. It's a far superior base than Hawthorn had to build off in 2015/16 and far ahead of Richmond's youth as well

Collingwood played plenty of finals with Grundy and Treloar on the list, they are clearly no barrier to playing finals.

The biggest thing is alway where you can win a Grand Final. If you do and they don't, fair play. If they do and you don't, Collingwood's mismanagement of their cap will have come back to bight.

Dekoning is a star
Henry has shown glimpses

The others you've mentioned are no different to what hawthorn fans saw of their list back then.
These players who look the part, but have shown little to nothing on field

The point is we still hold a decent hand with all our other picks + Hopper.
Please explain what the “significant impediment” is??? Your words…
