After watching a couple of podcasts lately with Cory McKernan interviewing various Nth Melb players & people back from the golden 90s era it got me thinking which player in the history of the club has had the best individual player performance over the course of one whole year.
I think the season by Wayne Carey in 1993 must be the one for me that was the best. He just dominated the game that year and would have to be one of the best ever by any player in the competition over a single year.
Others I guess would be Cory McKernan's 1996 when he was the equivalent of Carey at times.
Blights 1978, Glendinnings 1983 Brownlow years are also up there. Blight also kicked 102 goals n 1982 in his final year.
Keith Greigs 2 Brownlow years were before my time but they must have been pretty special. He is one of my fav North players of all time.
Also Longmire's 98 goal season was pretty good for a young kid at the time. He was 19
For me it would be 1-Carey 1993, 2- McKernan 1996, 3-Glendinning 1983, 4-Blight 1978 . 5-Longmire 1998

Carey’s 1998 season was his best (GF aside) IMO.

Honestly which year did Carey have the best overall seasons performance by a North Melbourne player?

Some of those other names have come close tho.

Blight's 1978 was next level and heads the list for mine.

Spent a lot of time on the ball that year as a ruck rover. Imagine if a midfielder kicked 77 goals today.

Honourable mentions to:

Carey. Any of his best years. Hard to believe there's ever been a better player than him.

Blight in 1982. 5 foot 11. Kicked 103 goals and was still standing on blokes heads at age 32. What a super star.

Granted a bit before my time, but Sel Murray won the VFL's goal kicking in 1941 (now Coleman medal) kicking 88 goals in 17 games in a team that only won 6 games.

He was no flat track bully either. He averaged 5 goals or more against each of the four finalists that year.

Said it before on this Board, but how he missed the Club's team of the century is a joke.

Kicked roughly 400 goals in a hundred games in a weak team and in an era where goal kicking tallies were much lower.

From West Melbourne, even better.

Its pretty hard to pick I reckon. He kicked nearly 4 goals a game in 1999.

I honestly couldn't pick Carey's best season between 1993 and 1999. Even in 1996 he was as good as anyone, McKernan just had one out of the box that year and that's why he's in the discussion.

In 1998 if he'd kicked straight in the GF everything is over by half time (Captain sets the tone imo). Genuinely cost us that game being the captain and kicking poorly. So if that hadn't happened then yeah, you couleasily say 1998 might be the peak. But because of that game it just dulls the year a bit.

Wayne Carey 1998
80 goals, 49 Behinds from 25 games
368 kicks, 121 handballs @ 19.56 possessions per game
193 Marks, 113 Inside 50's and 40 tackles

It's a shame Goal Assists and Score Involvements weren't recorded back then, I'm pretty certain they would be close to career best.

The only stats that come close (IMO) are:
Wayne Carey 1996
82 goals, 55 Behinds from 25 games
332 kicks, 154 handballs @ 19.44 possessions per game
200 Marks and 31 tackles

and

Harry Sheezel 2024
14 goals, 1 Behind from 21 games
330 kicks, 296 handballs (incl. 209 contested) @ 29.81 possessions per game
133 Marks, 73 clearances, 75 Inside 50's, 20 Goal Assists and 80 tackles
