He was solid in one of our NAB cup games IIRC.
There's vision of it on youtube.

He had one kick in the NAB Cup and it was under pressure and a turn over :S

However he did crunch a pies player in a tackle which was beautiful to watch. He seemed to fit, just didn't find it enough. Will be great to watch him this preseason.

Andy's NAB Cup and first preseason form seemed better than the few games I saw him play at the Ants. Works hard though and has all the tools. Well skilled for a big bloke, good enough overhead and moves very well for a guy his size.

Its hard to draw a form line through it, because the list in the past was in desperate need of renovation, so it would come as no surprise that many new players were given their debut over the past 4 seasons and the list now is showing much better quality players, more depth and therefore less need for major changes.

Having said that, last year showed more players getting their debut than for quite some time and you could not say that our list at the start of this season was in poor shape. We did have a few key injuries, mostly to our talls, but the list below shows it wasnt new talls getting their breaks, Watson being the only one.

What the list does show is that Ratts isnt affraid to give players their first taste of AFL footy. The list does not include players that debuted for Carlton but had played games at other clubs (Judd, Warnock, Henderson, Collins, Mclean, Laidler and Johnson, Cloke and maybe others since departed that I cant remember) during that time. The list also does not include players that have been delisted since debut (too hard to research) with the exception of Twomey whom I include to show Ratts isnt scared to play new untried at this level (that list would also include Pfeiffer, Bentleigh, Aussie, Jacobs and others I cant remember).

2002 Thornton
2003 Waite, Simmo
2004 Carrots, Tex
2005 Betts, Russell
2006 Murphy, Bower
2007 Gibbs, Hammer, Jamo
2008 Kruze, Ellard, Army
2009 Yazz, Garlett, Joseph, Robbo
2010 White, Lucas, Davies
2011 Watson, Duigan, Curnow, Okeefe, Touhy (Twomey)

So on the basis of this, I would not be at all surprised to see 4 players get to debut in 2012.

(Its also interesting to note that Heyne has more AFL experience than Laidler had last year before his first game in Navy.....just sayin!)

As long as they stay fit, I can see at least the following players getting a debut:

Mitchell - Minimal as he rwgains fitness but we are still looking for a KPF
Kerr - He is too skilled to leave out and rotation policy will ensure he gets a run
McCarthy - Will get a taste against GWS or similar
Levi - Rotation plus Ratts will want to give him an opportunity before potential delistment/upgrade/re-rookie
Rowe - Looks likely esp. to rest Waite and nurse him through the season
McInnes - Like Casbah and Kerr he'll need to be looked at, to decide his post season fate
Bootsma - Will get a taste as he looks worth investing in

Looking forward to seeing how the rotation policy goes

:)I agree pretty much with your players who won't get a game in 2012.
I think you have to add Thornton into your playing list. He has now become a very versatile player. The type Ratten likes to have on the park.
I would think this year we will choose a different team most weeks. Depending on the makeup of the opposition and where we are playing.
Ratten wants speed and aggression.
The players who comply more regularly to the game plan will be played.
He wants a good balance between height, skill & speed.
Some players may not be asked to travel.
If we can get away to a good start and have something like 8 wins out of the first 10/11 games then you will see much more resting of players.:confused::confused:
GIVEN that we have Waite, Henderson, Jamison, White, Walker, Kruezer, Hampson, Warnock available, Thornton will not see much game time.
I don't see him as versatile any more - other than he has played both forward and back - he's not a good defender and IF used will be primarily a forward. His position last season was maintained by constant injuries to key players - his stats weren't very impressive at all...except for the ESS final when everyone got leather poisoning. Time will tell.

Really looking forward to seeing Mitchell, at least in the nab but I guess He'll have Hammer, Rowe and Kruezer in front of him come the regular season.

Otherwise would go with Jeremias' list.

You should watch the first half of the WC final.

Agreed.
Carlton played 37 last year and not out of want.
Chances are that if you've only had to use 28 -32, you're in a good position.
Carlton has announced that it will use a rotation type policy, but I doubt that necessarily extends to using 37+ players.

There are just going to have to be some good players missing out next year.
Having 3 good ruckman is handy come a rotation policy. It's a position you can get pretty banged up.

I'm hoping Mitchell can do a "Butcher", injured one year, good the next. Asking too much probably but can hope...lol!

The following players are those who I do not expect to see represent the Carlton Football Club in a senior game in 2012:

Rhys O'Keeffe
Even though ROK is wearing a moonboot ATM and injury prone, I still think he's a chance to play senior footy. If we lose Gibbs to injury, ROK is one player who might be promoted as a replacement. Fair few ahead of O'Keeffe and we like to play a running game, but he would bring something that Collins and Kerr don't have. Solid unit with a cannon for a leg who is hard, good overhead and can deliver by foot. Rhys isn't quick over distance, but I can see him playing a role forward of centre.

Well you would have the think that ROK and Kerr must have something more to offer given we kept them and let a handy tall in Irish go when forced to delist someone. I am happy for Irish that he remains on a senior AFL list but at the same time disappointed he didnt fall to the rookie draft where we could have picked him back up again. And if ROK or Kerr dont play in 2012 you would have to doubt they would stay on the list, making the de-listing of Irish all the more disappointing.

Thornton was fast becoming the pack crasher we needed anyway. Carlos is better off at GWS where he'll play whenever his body permits.

Mitchell, Rowe and Hampson will fill the void quite nicely :thumbsu:

Setanta will be given opportunities from day 1 at GWS, hence may have some of us cursing for letting him go, but the decision was the right one, albeit a painful one.

The fact we were always going to recruit Rowe may have played a part to having had the Irishmans papers stamped.
The other thing which would not have favoured Setanta was that he found it hard to conform to coaches instructions.
Age and the fact we had to move some on, may have sealed the deal.

We still don't know as to the contract that Kerr has been given, but he's a stayer for mine.

ROK? Rookie so didn't come into consideration.
I recall Cazzesman suggesting that Kerr will cover for Houlahan's finishing skills in the forward zone

People have suggested that Kerr can't fit into a forward line with Garlett and Betts there.
I think they may be wrong.
Yes I feel the same. I know its not fashionable thinking but I feel Garlett is under a lot more pressure than people understand. No player can afford to go missing in games now and each player must play according to instructions. I think a couple of other players will learn this the hard way during the year as well.

All this may be true, and I have said many times not to get hung up on personalities, they come and go. But if its true that the big Irishman went because we had no-one else we needed to delist and had to delist someone (this assumes that had the rules not been as they were we would have kept Setanta and not recruited Rowe, which I doubt, seeing as how we had chased Rowe 2 years running) and Irish was bottom of the must have list, then you would like to hope that another player who must also have been at the southern end of that list but made the cut would make the most of the reprieve. That is of course assuming that Kerr was at the southern end of the list, and given he is yet to play a game in 2 seasons and others have come and gone in that time, you would think this is make or break year and it would be a shame if it breaks and it comes to pass that we could have hung on to Irish for a season or 2 more.

Of course that would be hindsighting the selectors and I dont do that. I am not in possession of all the facts as they are, and I am sure they made the right choices.

I agree he will get more opportunity (provided he is fit) at GWS and I wonder if he asked for more opportunity elsewhere, even though a deal couldnt be done in trade period. I'd like the think that isnt the case but that isnt the logic thats the emotion. Irish was a great footy story (still is albeit at another club, and I would have like to have seen him get his name on a locker is all.)

Logic says it is what it is and to move on.

If 38 gets dropped in 2012 I'll follow Richmond.

I dunno about this. Garlett kicked 48 goals this year and played every game. Kerr is coming from along way back to usurp someone like Garlett. Not saying it can't happen but would surely be highly unlikely at this point.

One major attribute Garlett has that Kerr doesn't is his pace and his ability to apply pressure or perceived pressure in the forward line cannot be underated.
