St. Kilda's, consisting of: Hudghton - Maguire - Koschitzke - Riewoldt - Gehrig.
Essendon's, consisting of: Fletcher - Michael - Hille - Lucas - Lloyd.

FWIW, I still think St. Kilda has the strongest spine in the competition. Essendon, West Coast and Fremantle not far behind.

St. Kilda's by the length of Bass Straight.

If Koschitzke is fit he makes a big difference.

What about?

Prestigiacomo - Clement - Fraser - Cloke - Rocca. Your thoughts

The spines you have named are some of the worst in the competition.
If you look at it Hudghton is an average backmen, still handy. And Riewolt is quality IMO.

Essendon has lloyd and hille.

Carlton

Sentanta - Waite - Ackland - Kennedy/Whitnal - Fevola
I'd rather that than any of the spines you mentioned. Although i'd trade ackland for any of those ruckmans.

It is far more common, when speaking of spines, to include the centremen rather than the ruckman. The ruckman doesn't play in the centre the entire time, they follow the ball. Not that this would make much of a difference to the poll... Hayes, Hird etc

Besides, this is a fairly ordinary poll. Too many variables
- Maquire will hardly play this year
- Kosi will hardly play for an extended period of time
- Lloyd has had almost a year off
- The bombers spine is AT LEAST 5 years past its best...

This is a 8th place spine IMO...

-I've never had huge Wraps for Rocca...

-Cloke is still 2 years off yet in my books.. Not saying he wont be a quality player because he will, I just don't think hes there yet..

-Fraser is good but not great...

-Clement is close to if not the best CHB in the comp...

-Prestigiacomo, like Fraser is good but wouldnt call him the best FB in the league by a long way...

Carlton Spine:

Thornton
Waite
Murphy
Kennedy
Fevola

Murphy could be switched with any other gun midfileder like Simpson or Stevens. Setanta could replace a backman if needed. Lance could play CHB or CHF.

Absolutely craps on:

Dawson (Sorry but you couldn't lure Thornton)
Croad (If he ever plays again)
Mitchell
Buddy (I realise CHF's should be able to mark overhead)
Williams (I realise FF's should be over 5 foot 10)

Not even a contest!

they have been using the centre possy for rucks, not midfielders.

The fact that Micheal or Fletcher can't play CHB is an issue and wont be able to play in the same backline is an issue. That is what lets down the bombers spine. But i'd take Saints.

Let the Saints' spine have somewhere near a full season together first before we judge - while it looks good on paper, based on achievements it really only has 1 genuine gun in Riewoldt (unless you count Gehrig's past as a Coleman winner and AA, but let's be honest he's nobody's choice for either these days) and more serious/long-term injuries than you can count.

Having said that, the Bombers' spine is ancient so yeah I'd have to say St Kilda's on potential only.

Interesting call when you consider he's filled out over the pre-season!

Travis is bound to step up this year - he's got the ability and appears to relish the extra workload.

Of course hes going to play better this year... I just think he may take a little longer to mature into his spot... Don't get me wrong, I have huge wraps for the kid.. I think hes going to be a star... :D :thumbsu:

If people are going on about how Lloyd is coming back from injury then bloody mention that Hayes and Maguire are coming back from season ending leg injuries and Kosi who barely played last season after the WB game

Michael = Hudgeton (on the premise that I don't know how Michael is going to perform)

Fletcher > Maguire

Hayes > Stanton

Reiwolt > Lucas

Lloyd > Gehrig

Essendon quite comfortably. For the Saints, only Riewoldt (and maybe G-Train) is likely to have any impact this year. The others are either past it or broken down.

Essendon's key backs are getting on though. Pitty 'cause you won't find a better combo in the AFL at the moment. The Dons could probably do some damage if they didn't have the 16th best midfield in the comp.
