Up until this offseason I probably would have said St Kilda, but then they made some good trades. Now, I'd probably say Sydney. They had a few old farts retire but they still have plenty of them. Haven't been impressed with their drafting lately either besides the academy prospects.

It could be Melbourne by Rnd 10 as there are some worrying signs there.

They capitulated last year and its often very difficult to turn it around once that kind of decay has set in
Do you even football? We had 17 players go under the knife and a huge injury list. Don’t feel the need to reply, I already know how thick it’ll be.

Geelong have 1 more year before they fall of a cliff
Have never heard this one before 🙄.....On the actual topic, I would say Adelaide, not much good exposed youth to speak of & in the process of trying to rebuild a clearly toxic culture.

Genuinely - this is not coming from Cats vs Hawks bias - I would put Hawthorn right up there (though Mitchell being fit obviously makes a difference) on paper, but they are just so damned good at squeezing every drop of potential out of everyone that it wouldn’t surprise me if that same list took them to the top 4.

Hawthorns, ******* Hawthorns. It’s like the scrap heap challenge of lists.

Very unlike Melbourne supporters to be up and about in the pre-season after being the laughing-stock of the competition the year before.

Right now Adelaide.

Their recent drafts haven't shown much, obviously things can change. Also Fagan and Roo.

St Kilda is an honourable mention, they've risked a bit. Sydney isn't overly exciting but they just find a way to fix things up....

Never heard it? It's not an uncommon belief. Ablett's past cooked, Selwood will drop off very quickly after the kind of hard-hitting career he's had plus his age, Dangerfield similar - may have 1 or 2 more goods years in him. Kelly's gone, lots of others into their senior years.
As for Adelaide, lots of those who didn't want to be there are gone, we have a new coach who is clearly an excellent man manager...... culture can change very quickly in a football club. Have you heard any interviews of our players of late? They're loving the changes. We're a strong club, we'll be fine.
As for our young players - not the best list for sure. But a number of high draft picks yet to hit their straps and lots of young ones denied games last year due to Pyke. We'll be ordinary this year but should be good after that.

My first comment was in jest so you know, as I have been hearing we’re 1 year away from being cooked for 10 years now.....And I never believe interviews from players, the answers are straight from the media managers mouth & is very rarely the actual truth.

it’s not an uncommon belief no.
Because it’s been said since Ottens and Ling retired. Since the year before when Ablett left. Since Johnson, Scarlett, Chapman, Enright, Corey, Milburn, Bartel, Mooney, Stokes, Harley, Kelly, Mackie, Lonergan, Wojinscki, Podsiadly, Varcoe, Caddy, Rooke, Hunt, Menzel left.

for all the shit we cop about losing finals - and granted a fair whack of it is warranted - I don’t think people genuinely realise what an effort it has been to continually be thereabouts given the players we have lost to retirement or the trade table.

In the spirit of the original post, I think there are five clear standouts. I cant see any of Essendon, North Melbourne, Port Adelaide, St Kilda and Freo winning a flag with their current list. All ARE too reliant on their top 3-5 players. The intriguing part is they may all finish 7-13 on the ladder this year so shrewd trading/recruiting along with the 'exciting youngsters' reaching their potential may see all become contenders but atm I can't see it.
We don't even have a standout top 3-5 players anymore because our top players injure themselves too often. Our problem is the exact opposite. We don't have that many genuine stars of the competition (who aren't always on the sidelines). Our list consists players below that top tier. Our most talented player has only played a handful of games the past two years.

Injuries are just excuses.

Good teams with strong mental fortitude overcome and find a way to win
They are not excuses. They are reasons. There’s a difference.

Also, saying that injuries is the only reason for why we sucked is ****ing ignorant.

It’s not the only reason. The biggest factor was that most of the team were unfit because they weren’t being conditioned in the preseason as a result of numerous off season surgeries. Therefore, we were always going to be on the back footy early. The club is certainly not treating it as an excuse, that’s for sure.

It’s absurd and unoriginal to treat these reasons as excuses as if it’s somehow magically possible to get over those hurdles with ‘sheer mental strength’.

It’s just not possible, bordering on stupid actually.

North have to be the worst placed.

Watching the Dees vs. Roos “U23” practice match last week it is as clearly evident that they have little to no depth (not helped by either poor coaching or an in ability to execute a game plan).

Hawks a close second. There list just looks half baked. It’s clearly not good enough for a premiership tilt, yet they have bought in players as if it is. Even with Clacko they are finishing in the bottom 6 sides.

Adelaide, Sydney and the Bombers are also stuffed. Although I rate Adelaide as a club, so expect they’ll get it right quickly.

Anyone saying Gold Coast is mad. There +5 years away from being a contender, but they have got some serious young talent in a cluster on that list.
