I gave up on The Whisky Club. There were too many ordinary whiskies, not to mention the "exclusive" offerings that proved to be not as exclusive as claimed.

I joined The Single Malt Whisky Club instead. It's the same deal: the chance to opt out every month. I get maybe two thirds of them, mostly Australian whiskies and rarely a dud.
 
Managed to pick up a few barrel samples from Old Kempton and had a few of their bottles on hand and given it's winter made the call to review them all in succession. The main takeaway was their cask strength excels, anything below 50% ABV is very hit and miss. Have ranked them all below with a score out of 100.

for those who havent tried it. it's one of the best bourbons i have ever had.

i dont mind Old Kempton, but like a lot of the other Tasmania whiskeys it is a complete rip off on the price point.

Their classic Single Malt is like $220 bucks....for the same price you can get a Dalmore Cigar Malt, for 40 more bucks you can get a 15yr old Macallan.
 
Eagle Rare $85 bucks at dans. usually, $100

If you like good bourbon, get a bottle.

Love Balcones, the single barrel single malt is probably my favourite. Where did you hear that it won't be imported anymore? That'll be a shame.

Nicks has the Brimstone on sale at $100. They're out of stock with most of the rest of the range, so maybe it's already no longer being imported?

Yeah got mine from Nick's.

I heard it from a guy sitting at the bar of Silverlake Social on Chapel St.

Good place to try some American whiskeys.

Damn should have bought two.

You should consider trying the USA 90 proof version, the extra 5%.abv makes a world of difference

Nikka from the barrel for $75, Angels envy port finish for $85, or Laphroaig 10 sherry oak for $95 all present great value.

Or with Xmas coming up this is actually quite delicious, and I'm someone that usually finds cream/whisky liqueur pretty offensive.

Oooh that actually looks amazing as a Christmas tipple.

Finally opened an Xmas gifted Macallan 12 double oak today, had been a while since I had Macallan, it's easy to hate on it but it is a very good whisky, just overpriced.
I will say it is well suited for a warmer day over ice pour though.

I've also got a sherry oak Macallan given to me that's been gathering dust, thinking I need to open it and compare the two.

It depends on the Japanese whisky but to broadly generalise it's a little bit softer and more delicate than say a Scotch. Japanese whisky as a whole is pretty decent, but most of it is horribly overpriced these days due to the high demand and low output (which will gradually be fixed 2027 onwards).

If you're a Scotch drinker Nikka Coffey Malt is a good one to jump into, however Nikka from The Barrel will offer you a more authentic Japanese style whisky.
