COLLINGWOOD youngster Steele Sidebottom set the pace when the Magpies resumed pre-season training with a time-trial at Olympic Park this morning.

Sidebottom, the Magpies' first-round selection in the 2008 national draft, won the 2km time-trial ahead of midfielders Scott Pendlebury and Jaxson Barham.
Chris Dawes and Alan Toovey rounded out the top five.

he doesn't have very good pace, but it's a good run, although not surprising. didn't he come second or so last year after virtually just arriving at the club?
he' missing the speed and acceleration of most, but this time trial shows he can get to his limit and stay there longer. look forward to seeing steele come into his own in the 4th quarters where everyone else is slowing down.

Dawes is the story there, great effort for a power forward his size.

i had no idea dawes had a tank like that.. he a big man hopefully he can take a massive step this year!

You are not the Only One,

He should get more AFL game time though this season

Dawes was top 5 in the time trail last year, endurance is his strength.

Endurance wint help him take the next step though, he will need over head ability and to learn how to play as a big man to do that

He did the same thing last year and got everyone excited about a big year ahead for him (including me ) but unless he starts eating up the contested overhead marks at training i'm gonna stay sceptical this year.

Dawes only needs to realise he has all the attributes, the size and the body to take it up to any opponent, physically, and he'll crack it.:thumbsu:

If I was the club I would have him hitting big bags and getting belted pillar to post through the pre-season and making sure those nuts have dropped.

He looks spooky, big unit and a mean face, just needs an attitude to match. Be a bit Brownesque and just bowl some defender over in a serious way, or plant the knee in front. Might keep a few defenders at bay.

Said this last year, but he just looks like he's expecting a punch in the tum-tum. His arms are like babies at times - hardly look like getting over his head. Needs to deforest anything in front of him, then can be confident not many will be running back into him.

But does he have the Personality Though?

Well I think last year was the Beast's first full season following his knee troubles, I can recall Tark's and Did's really coming back to 100% in their second year following their reco's, it takes quite time to gain the confidence back I imagine.

He has the attributes, and now he should have the opportunity so this is it. This is his make or break year I reckon, will be given every chance to show if he's an AFL player so I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Not exactly Seeks, Dawesome did his knee mid-2006, so if you want to allow him a "recovery" year he's had that in 2007, and then 2008 and 2009 would have been relatively unhindered by any knee issues. FWIW, I think Dawesome needs a consistent run in the seniors to gain the necessary confidence to make the bigtime. He strikes me as very much a confidence player.
