So fellow Melbournians it is that time of year again, who here is planning to go and what exhibitions or events are you looking forward to seeing?

I am really keen on the Purple Rain exhibit, the Secret Garden and the Molecular Kaleidoscope.

Last year it was packed and there were a huge amount of people who didn't know about it. This year its going to be ridiculous.

Hoping to do the full 12 hours

I'm heading down about 12 in the hope that the crowds will have thinned out a bit. Got a bit crowded last year especially round Flinders St.

I hope the projections on the buildings are back.

Will be heading to RMIT Level 7 for the music show and will be following my nose thereafter

I really enjoyed it last year, despite my mates getting refused into the Forum and somehow ending up in Cherry Bar, which wasn't even a White Night venue. I think we just needed more alcohol.

I won't be making that mistake this year, anyone who wants to go to Cherry Bar will be on their own. I shall be feasting on THE ARTS (and MDMA)

Yeah, from what I have read though they have tried to spread it out a little more so congestion is decreased.

Another thing is the weather. More people may know, but like the yearly St Kilda Festival the crowds seemed way bigger in 2013 because it was windier and colder this year.

Definitely, all down Flinders st supposedly.

I am doing a similar thing, theres a couple of main things I want to see, but Ima start at the State Library and just meander about from there and hope to be surprised.

Got a birthday at Crown and a party in Brunswick, will hopefully join the party at 1-2 when the crowd thins.

One of my friends friends was having a big birthday party. Just decided to cancel and meet up there. I'm starting to wonder now if I should go later to avoid the chaos, given how publicised it has been.

No idea what this is but I came in thinking of "White Knight" (a guy who defends chicks on the internet in hope of attaining some poosay)
It is kind of like a festival in Melbourne CBD and surrounds, where the CBD, various galleries, businesses, restaurants and areas of the city close by are host to live music, performing arts, film and exhibitions, many interactive or unusual, from 7pm to 7am.

In 2013 there was supposedly 300k visitors, this year looks like it will be bigger.

Last year they planned for 100,000 and 300,000 turned up, this year they are planning for 500,000.

There were quite a few people in the CBD last year who were just there for a regular night out and hadn't a scooby what was happening, it was amusing to see their reaction.

Yeah and I suppose that goes to the sense of wonder or surprise it is supposed to invoke.

So I can't decide, do I plan thoroughly and miss some things, or do I leave it and maybe not see everything but hopefully have a few wtf moments.

I thought it was a Klan meeting.

I thought this thread was about the 80s movie starring Mikhail Baryshnikov, disappointed.

You'd have no chance of chatting up a damsel in distress with so many White Knights getting about and trying to spoil the party.

lol @ White Night below 40 degrees latitude.

St. Petersburg yes, Melbourne no.

You can't just take any old fad and apply it anywhere you want to.

I didn't go last year but Melbourne seems like the perfect city to host an event like this, tbh. So what if it originated somewhere else, just enjoy it for what it is.

If it's not a white night all your doing is celebrating the summer solstice which curiously was back in December.

Perhaps I'm really not getting it

I'll be going this year. I ended up wearing my tanty pants last year with the crowds as it was all funnelled down Swanston St. Ended up hibernating in a pub for a few hours. Hopefully they've planned well and the crowds are more spread out. I'll be going after an afternoon of drinking, too, so that will either help or hinder my crowd tolerance.

Not expecting to see everything, but I'll be happy if I can continue to stumble upon some really interesting stuff until I turn into a nanna and want to go home.
