Who’d win the ‘dream’ Ashes series-England 1932-33, or Australia 1974-75

Just for a bit of fun, let’s have a ‘fantasy’ Ashes series to be played in Australia over 5 tests between the 1932-33 English team under Douglas Jardine, and the 1974-75 Australian side led by Ian Chappell.

The 5 Tests will be played at Brisbane (1st Test), Perth (2nd Test), Adelaide (3rd Test), Melbourne (4th Test-Boxing Day), and Sydney (5th Test).

So, it’ll be interesting to see who’s going to come out on top in the fast bowling department, Larwood and Voce, or Lillee and Thomson.

Depends on the rules they're playing with. I don't see England scoring much against Thomson and Lillee bowling bodyline. Voce was almost medium pace from memory and managed to be lethal with bodyline, imagine what Thommo would do.

I would be more inclined to make it the England team of 1928-29, the previous tour, who trounced Australia 4-1 with fair cricket, and were close to performing a 5-0 whitewash. Many English players from that 1928-29 team did come back to Australia for the 1932-33 series, but I think Jardine vs Chappell would be an even series, as long as England were given a decent number of first class games before the first Test. None of these pointless two-day games or 15 players-a-side rubbish.

Lillee/Thomson 74/75 even into 75/76 would have rolled any side over a test series .
You’ve got Thomson at his absolute frightening peak then Lillee still bowling rapid enough with all the tools/skills post back injury

I wonder how Douglas Jardine would handle Lillee and Thomson from the 1974/75 era, especially Thomson who was frighteningly quick until the time he did his shoulder.

Reading about him I would say he wouldn’t have shirked it and would have got in line no doubt about it .

But the challenge I guess is we are trying to compare bowling in the 30s against bowling during a truly great era of test cricket , bowling wise .

Hearing first hand accounts of Thomson and Lillee in 74/75 from experienced test player in that series is enough for me to think they would beat most of not all opposition

Aussies for mine.

I always subscribed to the Richardson theory of Bodyline retaliation. Give it back to them and it’d stop.

Both very good sides but I’d back that 74/5 side over pretty much most. Early 90s Australian next.
