Im not 90 years old so i havent seen many past players but through the eighties and nineties i thought there were a few standouts like the Krakours, Kickett and Lewis. Soon to be the greatest aboriginal to play the game without a doubt will be Wirripunda. Anyway id like to hear your serious thoughts on the subject

2000 the year of the Eagle

Going back a fair way I remember Syd Jackson as being an excellent player for Carlton. As a Roos supporter I have to say that the first season in the VFL of the Krakouer Bros (1982) was just about the most exciting football I've seen, they added a whole new dimension to the way the game was played. That was also Maurice Rioli's first year and he was pretty good! For overall impact on the game , and not just on the field, I would go for Michael Long as the most influential aboriginal footballer. I think you might be right about Wirrpunda, he's beginning to play the game on another level!

Jod,

I think Wirrpunda is a great player but i think he'll have some competition from Byron Pickett. Ferious at the ball, ability to spoil when it seems he out of the contest, great kick that always set up play and he's super quick too.

The Aboriginal players are definitely the most exciting to watch. We had the Krakouer boys in the 80s, Maurice Rioli, Nicky Winmar, Derek Kickett, Michael Long in the earlier parts of the 90's. We could also add in the likes of Andrew McLeod, Darryl White, Ronnie Burns, and Justin Murphy to the stars of the latter part of the 90s. The stars for beyond 2000 would be Byron Pickett, David Wirripunda, Michael O'Laughlin and Adam Goodes. I also noticed that there is a guy called Leon Davis running around in the Magoos for Collingwood who showed plenty of potential. Even though I never saw him play, Stephen Michael from WA has a lot of good wraps on him.

Clem Michael doesn't have the flair of others, but his value to Fremantle is increasing rapidly.

I agree with a lot of the names mentioned... but don't forget Michael McLean ... A Well respected good guy...

Polly Farmer. Not only did he revolutionise the game, but he's got a tunnel named after him!

PaulKanga2000, Pickett has nothing on Wirripunda and if Buckley doesnt stay consistent then give the browmlow to Wirripunda now. I always thought Chris Lewis was a brilliant player certainly worth putting in the top ten aboriginal players of all time.

Polly Farmer was the most influential player by far. He actually changed the way the game is played and not too many players have done that - black or white.

In my memory the Krakour Brothers were simply sensational and this Swans fan will always have fond memories of Derek Kickett and his time at the Swans, especially 1995-1996.

Does Barry Cable get a mention, The best and most consistent I have seen. Others who have impressed are: the Krakouers, Derek Kicket, Polly Farmer and Stephen Michael.

As far as todays footballers Picket and Wirripunda are miles ahead of the rest.

He never played VFL but Stephen Michael would be one of the very best. Played a lot like Dean Cox though was even better / more dominant. Many teams tried to entice him to Vic but he would never leave WA.
