gifted every advantage we never ever got. A team of 1st draft picks prancing around
The fact Freo didn't get the kind of concessions afforded to the Suns or GWS stands to reason given they are in a football state with the people, clubs, facilities and history behind them on a state level to succeed. The same goes for the Eagles & the SA based clubs.
The initial Adelaide licence was owned by the SANFL and was (while technically a combined effort of all SANFL clubs except Port) in actual fact largely a joint effort of the few key powerful SANFL clubs (mainly the Redlegs but also Glenelg & Centrals) in direct aggressive opposition to prevent Port from entering the competition... The Redlegs in particular had a long, proud history and the initial "Crows" side thus had the backing of a rich long history, in a footy state, with the people and facilities already in place to help achieve success. Just like Freo. Just like the Eagles. And just like Port.
However, the QLD/NSW clubs are fighting in a hostile environment. Initially The Lions, Swans and Suns each had no real previous investment or support in Aussie Rules in the area they were designated to be established or "play for"... Except GWS. They strolled into the competition off the back of 30+ years of our hard work, into a region knowing Aussie Rules and with some support, facilities etc established. They have been given the easiest ride into the competition out of all the expansion/relocated clubs; Without a shadow of a doubt... Plastic franchise couldn't be more apt to describe them.
I support Aussie Rules and in particular expanding the game into traditionally non-aussie rules playing states... BUT... The AFL have gone way too far with GWS. In their current state, with all those draft picks and all that entitlement... I can't bring myself to barrack for them. Maybe in a few years, when they have had a few generations of players through, they are drafting & trading like all the other clubs and have established themselves fairly off their own backs.
Sure, they might have had better management than the Suns but they have also been gifted a region and supporter base already primed by us for 30+ years.
IMO, without us and our committment and hard work, there would be no "national competition" and certainly I believe there would be no Lions, Suns or GWS.
C'Mon Tigers. Smash these 1st round draft picks back to breakfast point.
Sorry I don't ever comment on this site but have to reply to this. What a load of rubbish.Gifted a region and supporter base.U serious? How else could Giants have been successful without concessions?. I'm also a swans member and supporter since the mid 70s.The fact is Swans did didly squat to promote the game in Western suburbs pre Giants.Secondly the Giants are really the only ones not gifted a supporter base.I lived on the Gold Coast for years. They were more pro AFl than GWS in 2011-12..Also Its far harder for Giants to win home or away games due to crowd support than Swans.I went to 14 16 and 19 Grand Finals.Much easier for Swans but Giants are growing.Compare 17-19 prelims and GF to show growth.Warning to GtG. You have exceeded your posting limit.

Overall it's Fair enough if old South Melbourne supporters don't support Giants and I get people don't like individuals on certain teams It's great Swans have rusted on support in Sydney now compared to mid 90s.What I don't understand is Swans supporters who can't recognise that it's great for everyone if Giants are successful and don't support Giants against Melbourne teams in finals.
How is it great for everyone? More specifically, how is any other club's success great for me? I don't like the way the Giants go about it and there are a few of their players I actively dislike, so of course I would be happy to cheer against them. It's entirely irrelevant to me if they were playing against a Melbourne team, some other interstate team or the Swans. What I don't understand is Swans supporters who can't recognise that it's great for everyone if Giants are successful and don't support Giants against Melbourne teams in finals.
