Vote here for who you think is the best afl/vfl player ever to play in the history of the game. And if thats too hard what about the woest player ever to play in the history of the game.

I've watched the footy since 1981 and the best player I've seen is Wayne Carey by a mile. The amount of games this bloke has won off his own boot is staggering. For pure skill and class, can't go past Darren Jarman.
Worst players Michael Laffy and Trent Bartlett.

Never saw Bob Skilton, Dick Reynolds, Polly Farmer, Big Nick, Daryl Baldock etc

But from what I have seen 1975:

Best:

1. Leigh Matthews

Daylight

2. Wayne Carey / James Hird (if he manages three more great years injury free)

Daylight

3. Pick of: Robbie Flower/ D.Breteton/ N.Daniher/ S.Madden/ L.Baker/ J. Dunstall/ G.Ablett

Wayne Carey is the best all round footballer I have seen.

Older Richmond people claim Royce Hart was even better ... if that is the case then I can only imagine how good he must have been.

Wayne Carey by a long way.
(Sorry Tiger fans, but Royce Hart would not play in the same league as Carey.)
For second, Leigh Mathews easily.

Not sure about the best player, but the worst would probably have to be Mark Fraser.

I hope he makes a better umpire than a player.

Gotta reply to this one...

Leigh Mathews... Extended daylight hours

Then the others. Wayne Carey excellent but broken by injuries. Hird/Flower poetry in motion.

Look , Leigh Mathews won 8 B&F's for Hawthorn in an era where they had 10 champions playing.

You had to see him to believe it. Today you see a stubby grey haired coach being bullied by microphones. Really how good can a small guy be ?

But my memory remembers a running, bussling, baulking, accurate, skillfull tree trunk. And a leader.

I can't comment on players that I didn't see play but of those that I have seen I cannot see how anyone in the right mind could go past Gary Ablett for alround athletic ability and freakish skills. Ablett for me by a long shot (and I'm not a Geelong supporter). Worst player....Michael Laffy, the complete antithesis of the aforementioned G.A (that should tell you who I follow)LOL!!

Gary Ablett for mine.

At the other end of the spectrum, you can't go past Richard Lounder. :0

A lot of the replies have been for the more recent players - maybe because they are still fresh in our memories?

I agree with a few others who have nominated Royce Hart.

(Note, his son Simon Hart is a chance to be picked up as a rookie by Richmond.)

So much for the afterglow

Matthews is generally rated by the football community (players, coaches, media etc) of the time, as the best ever.

Dunstall for mine. Overall professionalism counts for a lot.

Carey, Hird, Jarman from currently playing list.

Is no-one nominating Plugger ? The greatest goalkicker of all time ? Parhaps because he isn't.

And Michael Tuck should rate a mention for sheer achievement.

Pluggers records might be beaten but Tucky's won't
