Just wondering who everyone on here supports and why?

I never really had any interest in Rugby at all until the Melbourne Storm were formed. Even when they first started i wasnt interested, but then in their second year they asked the Hawthorn Cheer Squad to make banners for them and so i got involved with that and got to go to the games and started following them.

I even managed to get along to the Grand Final, that was one excellent experience that i will never forget!

You probably can guess who I support...

I love my Storm as much as the Dees.....if you had told me that some 9 or so years ago I would have laughed you off the planet!!

I met a friend at a Demons vs. Swans game in Sydney and she started at me about following League and Balmain at the time....At first I told her she was crazy because rugby was crap (mind you I hardly ever saw a game at the time!!!!)..... However, I slowly started to have a look at the game on tv...and fell in love with it....and have not believed I didn't have the time to have a look at other footy codes and since then I made a point of following more sport even though I was brought up on soccer.

I have not looked back since. And when Storm hit town, I was there in a flash.!!
I just feel Victorians generally don't take a real interest in league/union/soccer, etc. to a degree where they follow another team as well as their afl team because there's not enough promotion of these games on tv but since pay-tv has hit our homes, the culture is slowly changing.!! Victorians really bag rugby and league in particular....this really saddens me!! They try and compare them to afl whereas league, etc. are totally different in style.

I would imagine at least half of the Storm members have an afl team, which is excellent.!!
Many wear a afl scarf, t-shirt etc. and a storm jacket, jersery, etc....its really uplifting!!

Well i wouldn't call myself a real supporter.

League has always been there as a back up after AFL and cricket. Actually, coming from the family i do, you'd think AFL was the back up. Not so! When i was about 8 i started enjoying AFL, my family are Leauge and Union people so i was on my own when it came to footy.
So, i have never really been too involved with the game. My parents supported Balmain now they support Wests Tigers (after the merger) and so, i do too. Not much of a story really.
I do follow with an interest, but not like a real supporter.

I grew up in a Rugby League household, so I've followed it since I was around 4 or 5. The first game I went and saw was the 1976 Grand Final between Parramatta and Manly. My Parents informed me that if I didn't barrack for Parra, I'd be kicked out of the house and forced to live alone on the streets. Nice parents. Even though they lost, and my father threatened me again the following year, this time to support St. George, I stuck with the mighty Blue and Gold.

Growing up in Brisbane .... didn't have much say in what sport to follow up here. So yes, I've been a "League-y" since 1970. Followed local club Wests in Brisbane (and still do!). Have also followed Parramatta since about 1976/77 when Mick Cronin first appeared. (I used to model my kicking style on him as well!) Obviously, since 1988 have followed the Broncos and get my weekly fix on tv. Don't go to games anymore though .... that ANZ stadium is the worst stadium I've ever been to. Played juniors for Carina, and had 2 seasons in the seniors with Wynnum-Manly.

For the record, I have also followed the local Aussie Rules since 1978 .... developing an affinity for local side Coorparoo (RIP), and going on to play with them from 1981-1988 - only breaking from time to time for Uni. Thus I've had no probs following the Bears since 1987. Also played for Yeronga for 3 seasons, then a few seasons at Alexandra Hills.

I have only ever been to two games but I do go for the Storm becuase they are a Melbourne team. Before that I used to go for the Raiders but I really didn't care.

Canterbury...............solely because they were the Bulldogs as are Centrals in the SANFL who I grew up supporting.

Well, when I first moved to Sydney from Malaysia when I was 12, it's not entirely surprising that League was the first sport I noticed. It didn't really grab me, although I would watch it if it was on telly, or for the finals and SOO matches. I was not from a sport-watching family, so it took me till 2nd year uni to even attend my first sporting event. That was Sydney v North Melbourne at the SCG, round 13, 1997. And I have only missed 2 home games since - and had damn good reasons both times!

But I digress. My league team is Parra - they are my local team, and one of my good mates is a mad Eels supporter. I started going to games a few years ago (say '99?), and still go to as many home games as I can, on the condition that :

a) It doesn't clash with a Swans match
b) It doesn't clash with a Northern Spirit match (when the seasons overlap).

It kills me that I can't be there this sunday to see Jason Taylor break the all-time points-scoring record. I'll be at the SCG watching the Swans take on the Weagles. But one ear will be on the phone to my mate at Parra if JT scores the one point he needs!

Interesting trivia about the teams I support.. Swans play in Red and White. Eels play in Blue and Gold. Spirit play in Red, White, Blue and Gold :D

Wow I can crap on good.

I support the Broncos. I grew up on the Gold Coast and remember one of this big things my friends and i used to do at school was swap rugby league cards. The Broncos cards were the hardest to get and there was some great competition to get your hands on them. This was back in the days when chewies can with your footy cards.

Was a HUGE King (Wally Lewis) fan and Alf is an alltime favourite! Went off the Bronc a little during the super-league fiasco.

We lost to the Bulldogs on the weekend. Things are not looking good. I've had some good deals when it's come to the Essendon/Broncos double....1993 and 2000.

Hopefully 2001!

I barrack for North Sydney, who now are in the NSW Rugby League 1st Division. I still follow Rugby League, not as much as when I was younger but I don't really support any specific team these days.
My Mum and Dad were not huge sports fans but I have been one since I was young, probably got it from my Grandfather who was a big sports fan.
My Dad was a social member of Norths Leagues, and I think I must have always bugged him to take me to a match. I think I was around 6 or 7 when he reluctantly took me to my first match at North Sydney Oval. We played Cronulla and lost :D, and further developed my love affair with Norths, the affable losers ;)
Norths during the 80s lost a lot more than they won, in the 90s they improved but always stumbled in the finals.
They only ever won 2 premierships in 1921 and 1922, and made their last Grand Final appearance in 1943, a very long drought from then on.
There's talk that Norths might re-appear next year playing from the Central Coast if the Northern Eagles merger folds, but it looks like the NRL aren't keen for 16 teams.

My Great Uncle was a North Sydney Supporter. He was born in October 1922, a few months after their last Grand Final victory, a couple of blocks away from North Sydney Oval, where he lived until he passed away in late 1999 a couple of weeks after it was announced that they would merge with the Manly. He survived the entire 1990's with Cancer, praying he could see his beloved Norths win one Premiership. So I have a soft spot for the old Bears, and I hope Manly's attempts to take over the Northern Eagles licence fails. I'd hate to see the red and black disappear altogether.

GO THE MIGHTY SEA EAGLES!

I am a Manly supporter. I've lived in Manly-Warringah all my life, I play cricket for the leagues club...I'm pretty much a Sea Eagles boy through and through....unfortunately I don't have a team anymore, but still go down to watch the Central Coast team when they play at Brookvale Oval. And now it looks like we won't even be able to do that next year with Norths moving to the Central Coast because Manly are probably dropping out of the joint venture.....oh well, what can you do?

Briedis, Briedis, Briedis (shakes head despairingly) You had to let yourself down with those Sea Eagles. Actually, you'll be right if the joint venture folds, the license reverts back to Manly, so they will play as the Sea Eagles again. Seeing you're a Roos man, I'll let you off this time.

BTW, I'm a Parra fan, that's why I had to shake my head at you, given the rivalry we had in the 80's. I was a Newtown man til they folded, are you old enough to remember the all in brawl at half time in the 81 final when Newtown won the fight and the game? One of the best brawls ever seen.

I kinda followed the fortune of Norths and Penrith without really declaring myself as belonging to either team. Once the Storm came on the scene, it was natural for me to start following them!

I have an Aunt who lives in Cremorne and who we used to go visity. Naturally enough, they all followed the Bears, which is kind of why I did to.

My (ex) brother - in - law was a Penrith player - I think he may have managed a few first grade games in the early 90's - so also had an interest in the Chocolate Soldiers!

I grew up in the Parramatta area so I naturally followed the EEls

Used to support Canterbury just cause of the Bulldogs name but now I go for the Storm, but not that interested in it :o

Melbourne Storm cos i live in melbourne

can't say i cared at all for league until maybe a year or two before the Storm were admitted. i have probably been to close to 20 games all up.

i was screaming at the tv when we got the penalty try in 1999, god i was so excited. to be honest, i should have flown up cos i think a GF ticket was 30 bucks.

but as a spectacle, AFL rules.

Red and Black....

Its interesting to see you say that you were not interested in league until recently......I was a little bit like you, but a lot earlier when a friend convinced me to watch league...I used to initially say I hated rugby of any sort (mind you without even seeing a game!) but as time went on, the more I watch it, the more I grew to love league.

I don't agree with you that as a spectacle, afl beats rugby league.

For starters rugby league is more of a game that is totally suited to tv, where as afl isn't.
Also it also depends and what code you grow up with as to what your preference is out of the 2 codes.
If you like a lot of easy scoring, you usually enjoy afl.
I don't compare any of the footy codes because none of them are similar (maybe some similarities between union and league). They all have different aspects that please.
After virtually been brought up on soccer and then afl, I can find many faults with the codes, that a few years back I would not have noticed...

So just enjoy what we have.
We are lucky in Australia we have such a great range of footy to follow and support.....

It's the Roosters for me.I was one of those annoying English backpackers in 97/98 & I took the very oiriginal decision to live in Bondi, just a couple of minutes from the beach....... oh those were the days.Anyway I started following the Roosters & had high hopes of them with Freddie Fittler & Adriam Lam but they always seemed to come up a bit short.Still try & follow how they're doing but I tend to lose track.
