What ever you say about Nathan Buckley he was a very very good player and apart from the fact that he left us to win flags which turned out great for us I don't understand the hate of him except in jest.
He was a gun. I can understand why he left though. He hated the Bears as they didn't take the game seriously when he was here. Buckley tried to push his team mates to become more professional but they were just happy to have 'fun' and get paid for it so you can see why some of the players hated him. He came across as a flog but he just wanted to win so badly. I think I've heard a few former players say this in biographies etc.

As much as I make fun of him for leaving the Bad News Bears for premierships he really just wanted what was best for himself as a footballer.

yep, and when ever I have heard him interviewed he comes across to me as a decent well spoken and compassionate person.

Ah, Buckley leaving wasn't really a reflection on the Bears anyway. The AFL rules forced him to come play for Brisbane and he wrote it into his one year contract that he could leave to the Melbourne club of his choice after a year in any case so it wouldn't really have mattered how good the culture was at the Bears.

Still think it's funny how the coaching committee managed to stitch him up so he didn't win the Bears B&F, considering how good his season was.

Yeah I know about that clause which would be so illegal these days. But what I found interesting is that even though he was only going to be here for a year he did try to win at all costs and tried to get others to follow his professionalism. Bears players told him to get ****ed. :p

The most overrated player in the history of the game

Big call PRO.
Its funny. I would kinda love to see the bloke fail as a coach. But at the same time, everytime i hear him speak i gain a little more respect for him and i would feel a bit sad for him if he were to lose his job.
Nah just kidding! Collingwood, blahhh!

Like most people here, I've really disliked him all these years for leaving the Bears like he did.....until he started doing comments on SEN a few years back, and then on foxtel. He just came across as a really nice person, and begrudgingly I started to like him.

Media generated perception is usually all we have to go on when judging character when it comes to players/coaches. I am sure the vast majority of them are decent people including the ones that have a bad public image.

Agreed. He gave 100% the year he was with us. Passed on some positive training attitudes to a number of players as well

Redden is really an interesting case. In theory he should have been better off by his move. In practice it might shorten his career by a couple of seasons.

I think he will be hard pressed to become a regular in the Eagles team, never a good sign in your mid to late twenties.

As things have turned out, would he now have a starting spot in our team? His most like player is probably Basti, Matho or Jansen and I think that Basti would get a start before him. Matho would as well.

Not a good sign that he would struggle to make the starting lineup of the bottom team.

Big call PRO.

He played over 250 games of AFL footy so obviously he is a very good footballer.

Having said that I just don't think he is the super star that he has been made out to be.

In short, it is my opinion that being based in Melbourne and playing for the scum has magnified the accolades that he has received.

I tend to agree with you. I always thought he was made to look better in a mostly ordinary team.....but definately a good consistent player though, just not the champion they say he was......same with Judd imo.

Controversial here but Burger for me. Old Leuen just couldnt get on the part consistently enough and was holding back the development of Archie Smith.

The knock on Luey for me is that he couldn't take a contested mark to save himself.

Still can't

The slightest bit of body pressure and ....PLop!!.....down it goes

He must have very hard or small hands (for his size), or both
