We were more attacking in 2011. there is more then one attacking style of game. Were you proud when Bomber Thompson employed an attacking game style that cost us the 2008 and 2010 premierships ?
Despite having more All Australian players and winning more games we couldn't go back to back. Hawthorn and Brisbane were able to win 3 premierships in a row. Richmond won 2 premiership in a row. We failed to do so because we were turnover merchants.
Playing on at all costs up the middle of the ground would have turned us into turnover merchants in September over the past few years.
Let's learn from our past mistakes and take a balanced approach.
Nope. Those fast passages of handball that move the ball quickly foward are a genuine thing of beauty. As is a perfectly executed torp, shimmy or speccy. It inspires me as much as a Monet, albert camus novel, sitting on top of the grand canyon at sunrise or opeths majestic morningrise album.Getting a bit carried away aren’t we?

In 2010 we lost because we failed to move the ball long quickly to the foward line. Too focused on maintaining possession through handball and not enough on kicking it quickly over the foward press that malthouse and lyon were implementing and creating chaos balls in open foward fifties.
2008 was just a choke. We should of been 6 goals up at half time. Only lost 2 games for the season. Nothing wrong with the game plan then. we just didnt execute when shooting for goal and then got stage fright in the 3rd qtr.
Um no. Scott embraced the corridor in his early years. It became known as the Geelong highway during Scott's reign. Not Thompson's.From 2007-2010 we used the corridor to often rather than using the wings. This made it easier for our opponents to put a high evel of pressure on us. In 2011 this was fixed.
Had we of used the wings more in the 08 GF Hawthorn would have tired out earlier. This would have most likely resulted in them not being able to apply pressure on us going forward, moving the ball slower when they got a turnover and being less efficient going forward.
The more fatigue you are the harder it becomes to execute your skills. I strongly believe had we tired Hawthorn out by using the wings more they would not of kicked the ball so well and been so efficient in their forward 50.
Yep, agree with the above.Um no. Scott embraced the corridor in his early years. It became known as the Geelong highway during Scott's reign. Not Thompson's.
How Scott changed the game plan was less handball and more kicking it long over the forward press. Creating chaos balls in forward lines with little defenders. Thompson's game plan involved releasing players through handball rather then long bombs to contests deep forward. The forward press was developed to stop Thompson's handball game. The forward press weakness was bombing the ball over the top. Thompson recognised this in early 2010. Players weren't ready to change until 2011.
We've gone from one of the highest uncontested marking teams to one of the lowest, yet on the flipside we're so far one of the best at taking the ball from D50 to F50.GEELONG CATS
Metric: Uncontested marks
2021: 90.5 (#5)
2022: 75.2 (#16)
After years of being a controlled, conservative and possession-based team, the Cats have unveiled a bolder and braver approach during the early rounds. The Cats are now more daring in their decision-making and execution with a preparedness to move the ball on quicker and kick longer to a contest. It’s arguably been one of the most significant style shifts across the competition, hence the dramatic drop in Geelong’s uncontested mark numbers this season. It’s paying dividends to date, with the Cats improving from eighth to third in defensive 50 to inside 50 conversion.
When you are kicking sideways and backwards to free players, but not progressing the ball up the field, thats a pretty obvious stat. We've gone from one of the highest uncontested marking teams to one of the lowest, yet on the flipside we're so far one of the best at taking the ball from D50 to F50.

Literally one of the worst games Ive watched today.I'm going to wake up in a cold sweat over some of those 'chip chip chip' passages. Genuinely disgusting football.
Really really weird how we reverted after quarter time. Some of that is credit for the opposition but all our defenders made a conscious decision time and time again to look sideways before even thinking about moving it on more directly. It was an abomination.I'm going to wake up in a cold sweat over some of those 'chip chip chip' passages. Genuinely disgusting football.

Except the evidence is we have done it more often than not this year.Literally one of the worst games Ive watched today.
It’s evident we don’t have the skills to move the ball quick and take risks.
