But the game plan is that simple, surely any coach can teach someone in 2 weeks. Ross is no genius blah blah blah.

FWIW, I hope you end up living a happy life and see Freo win the next 4 premierships.
That last line wasn't required and I removed it.

Words like that will start to attract infractions....

You haven't tried as hard as you think. It's apparent in your post that you think I'm an idiot for not trusting "training reports" from the same guys who said Danyle Pearce was a crab last year.

I have tried on numerous times to point out that

a: that we pursued him in the first place despite having goalkicking mids to burn
b: he was a free agent who could have gone to any club but chose to come here
and c: was offered a 3 year contract right off the bat

As some kind of objective indicator of how highly the club rates him and where his place in the pecking order might be. But the local legends have thrown all of that out of the window because he had a quiet game in a scratch match that the club clearly treated as a joke. That is literally what most people are basing their new opinion of Sylvia on. A single practice match played in 37 degree heat that we lost by 100 points or so.

Guess what? The guys who backed Pearce in last year because of his past AFL form were right. The guys who wrote him off based on preseason were wrong. The guys who wrote Zac Dawson off were also quite clearly off the mark. Both guys have played every game they have been available for since joining the club.

So far this year, the guys who backed in Sylvia have been right too (he's on the plane for round 1 where the accepted BF consensus is WAFL all year).

See, you were doing so well up until the bolded.

How many people can you identify that have said this? I am truly interested?

They still work pretty well though. Why does something need to be revolutionary to be very effective?

What is your point?

My point is that it doesn't take 6 weeks to "learn Ross's game style". In case you missed it, there are a few here claiming that Sylvia can't play until he learns it.

It can take much longer than 6 weeks because Ross's "gamestyle" has a soul element, which is massive.

Jimmy Bartel gets this - unlike commentators who focus on tactics and gameplans. Compare his comments about the Hawks and Sydney (which were confined to their superior lists), with his comments about Freo, which included this:

To make things even harder for opponents, they are coached by Ross Lyon whose tough, disciplined style is etched all over this side. Freo has players who will do anything that he asks.

Lee Spur is a great example. Ross loves him because as Ross keeps saying he's willing to do anything for the team.

Is Sylvia willing to do anything for the team? That's the question Ross will be asking himself.

It mightn't take very long to learn the theories, rules and what you're supposed to be doing.

But I strongly suspect it takes a fair while until those rules are far enough ingrained that they're automatic. And if they're not close enough to automatic that Sylvia can get to where he needs to be quickly enough (either from not computing quickly enough, or being fit enough to get there), that means he's potentially a liability.

If there are other guys that are able to do the job better at the moment, then that's a good thing. Means we've got depth. He'll force his way into the team soon enough. He's got a three year contract. I'm sure that if the match committee wait a couple of weeks until he's game fit, confident and has shown some consistent good form then that'll be to his and the team's benefit.
