Grays 2014 is the most criminally underrated season from the past 20 years... His stats match up against Martin most dominant years and he destroyed that finals series too and was potentially BOG in all 3 games.

Yes, especially that ACL which he credits for making his approach to training and preparation much more professional. When he came back in 2013 he was a much improved player and 2014 speaks for itself.

Ollie also had injuries, mostly shoulder related which hampered his performance through several seasons.

I'm just saying you can't always predict a players career trajectory based on what they do in the first half of their careers. Particularly if they change their approach to what it takes to be a top echelon AFL player and also in cases where their body holds up.

If Martin put up those numbers he'd already have a statue (Dusty's 2017, more disposals than Gray, less goals, so it's close).

Dustys 2017 is the best season by a player in the AFL era. But Robbies 2014 is certainly right up there

Here is how the coaches saw Gray.

398 votes out of a possible 30 max votes x 25 games = 750 ie Gray polled 53.06% of possible max votes.

Boak was 2nd with 255 votes so 64.1% of Gray's total.

So Ollie would have to get 53.1% of 20 max votes x 24 games = 480 = 255 votes. At 1/2 way mark Ollie has 110 votes, and comes home like a train.

Edit Ollie ends up with 229 votes or 47.71% of maximum votes. Coaches agree Gray's 2014 was better than Ollie's 2021. Boak's 167 was 72.9% of Ollie's winning votes so he was closer to Ollie relatively than he was to Robbie.

Wines, Boak, Wingard have not/never will have years as good as Gray 14-16. I think the lack of finals in 15 and 16 makes his form less memorable.

Fair. I reckon his sustained excellence made it less pronounced too. It just became an expectation, rather than something that felt explicitly out of the box.
