There's a clear cut three imo: Voss, Hird, Kelly
There is a clear cut one imo: Wayne "The King" Carey.

Regardless of what he did at the end of his Kangas tenure, he was the most inspirational player and captain throughout the entire 1990s. No other player on that list has led their team like him (Paul Kelly close for inspiration but without the crowning glory).

Kernahan (he was a brilliant on-field leader, had unquestioned respect from a group of champions), Kelly (inspirational in his 100% effort each and every week, outstanding example for everyone at the club), Hird (face of the club, does the hard yard and stands up to be counted when it mattered) and Voss (full blooded approach to the game, showed no fear to his opponents)

Kernahan, because of his outstanding record and because I am little biased, with the other three very close.

(FWIW, neither Burke (champ though he is) or Riccuito dont realy belong in this poll)

Until he gets dumped for ditching his missus in his car to avoid a booze bus. Yeah, real role model for the kids at the club
Right so if we're knocking off people for bad off field behaviour, knock of the following
-Hird, bad mouthing umpires on a nationally telecast show, not a smart move
-Carey, screwing your best mate (and team mates) wife at another team mates house, again not a smart move
-Ricciuto, got involved in a bar room brawl with Port players at the Rams gate hotel in Adelaide
-Buckley, chose to leave Brisbane and go to Collingwood, if thats not the ulltimate in unforgiveable behaviour i don't know what is!

Top 4 Carey, Roo, Hird, Voss. 1 thing in common. All won 2 premierships each except for voss with three.

Then comes KERNAHAN.

thens kelly,bucks,burke, neitz.
Roo only has the one premiership

the crows won the other when he was injured, so does that mean that roo was not really missed??

Bickley was a better leader at the crows then Roo

Carey ahead of Voss, Carey's the second youngest Captain of all time, AA Captain at 21.

IF any of you question inspiration with this man, look at the 1994 finals series. Probably the two single most inspirational games in football history, back-to-back

Agree, Carey by the length of the Flemington straight. People quickly forget.

And you did forget Cousins on the poll. Incredibly inspirational to his teammates and other players.
dont bother.

We know how valuable he is, probably one of te best if not the best taking to the field today (in captaincy abilities) but people over east don't see what we do.

Paul Kelly,
Listen to Rocket Eade talk about how well respected he was at Sydney and the things he did on and off field. Eade still says he is the greatest player he has coached.

One story I remember him telling was of when Kelly was first picked up by the Swans and he had moved to Sydney as an 18 yr old and shared a place with a young guy who was an apprentice tradey.
The kid soon quit and moved home leaving Kelly to live by himself in the big smoke by himself, with no mode of transport and some distance from training. He would catch public transport to training a trip that took him at least an hour each way.
If that wasn't enough for him, a kid by himself, in a new place, no family or friends, their was a senior player, who Rocket would not name, who insulted Kelly every training and told him 'just give up, go home, you'll never make it'.

To think he pushed himself to be the best he could be and win a Brownlow along the way is a great story. But noit just that, we has probably the most respected player in the league in his time, right up there with Robert Harvey. The way he went about it. Lead from the front, from start to finish.

There were also stories of how Kelly would push himself so hard in games that he was physically unable to keep fluids or food in his body for hours after games due to the efforts he went to week in week out.

Forget about guys with natural talent, think of the every day guy who busts his gut and never takes a backward step or looks sideways.
Paul Kelly was Captain Inspirational.
I'd love to know who the 'senior player' in question was !

Shane Crawford for me. Yes he may not have led Hawthorn to any Flags but he gave a heap of inspiration to his team. Whenever we were down it would be Crawf who would lead the charge and get Hawthorn over the line.

Yeah....his leadership in some cliffhanger home and aways certainly gives him the edge over Carey and Voss:(

Tough call, good poll quesion really, but I went with Kelly. Not only a great player, but he seemed to be one who got the most out of others.
Buckley, Hird, etc, show the way on the field; but perhaps don't lead the other players in the same way that Kelly seemed to. Voss is up with the top group as well. In Buckley's case he almost acts as a playing assistant coach at times, barking instructions everywhere. Which I'm sure is good for some team mates, and maybe distracting for others. He wouldn't do it if it didn't work though - he'd be told not to for a start.
