Nearly everyone at Bigfooty (apart from the Fremantle supporters) seem to agree the past week has been an embarrassment for football and not the kind of thing we want to see at all.
Who do you think has come out the worse it terms of reputation after the trading period?
The AFL - After all, they are the one who set up this system, and agreed to keep the trading period at a week despite calls for it to be shortened to 2-3 days at the most.
Also got itself into hot water over a supposed intervention in the possible trade of Wayne Carey, with Andrew Demetriou apparently suggesting Wayne would be better off at the Swans.
The AFL was also widely criticised for its sudden draft concessions to Sydney and Brisbane, followed by an even more sudden backflip.
The clubs Accusing loyal servants of your club that they are selfish is not the kind of thing anyone wants to see. The cat fighting between clubs, the lying by Hawthorn and several others, the ability to throw anyone out of the club if it meant a better trade....it didn't look good.
The player managers How often did we hear about a player never wanting to play for his club again...through the player manager. And just about every player in the competition who was out of contract had their manager 'mentioning' that they could earn $100,000 somewhere else in a greedy attempt to bump up their salary, and in turn, their commission. The Ben Holland saga seems to have been mostly attributed to his manager.
The players Had the Essendon boys talking about how they would take a pay cut to stick together, but when push came to shove players were whinging and wanting to leave - and not just at Essendon. Players used to argue they only had a short time to make money in football, but all the marketing and media commitments available now means that is no longer a reasonable argument.
These guys are earning wages most of us could only dream of, for playing a game a lot of us would for free - should they be a bit less greedy come this time of the year?
The media My winner for sure. The pathetic efforts of the entire media, both print and electronic, has been nothing short of disgraceful. How many players have definitely 'quit' or played their last games? How many certain trades have failed to eventuate? Half the problems in the past week has been the media reporting rumours, lies and half-truths as facts to the awaiting public, who with nothing else to go on believe it. At least by cutting the trade period and having everyone in the one building, we would cut out all the rubbish the media have told us in the past week.
But what do you peple reckon - who has been the big loser repuation wise in the past 7 days?
