Some interesting thoughts in this thread but general consensus seems to be that the Gold Coast are in a better position than GWS. It is surprising given that GWS were given better concessions.

Fair call. Hypothetically, if GWS sign Buddy, does that put them ahead of Gold Coast straight away?
If GWS sign Buddy then it'll be a disaster for them

They already have Cameron, Patton and can pick up Boyd too

If your team finished on the bottom with one win and used your spare salary cap to recruit a player to the one part of the ground you don't need improvement you'd be dirty??? That's the sort of silliness Melbourne do

If GWS have $1.5 million to spend then they should target the best 2 midfielders they can get

Now if Gold Coast got Buddy they'd be instant premiership contenders next year...

Agree on this. But it probably is partly a marketing decision to get Buddy.

@topic: Agree generally on most people's call that Gold Coast in front because it looks like they are close to having an absolute superstar midfield.

Both sides need to work on defense. Both teams missed recruiting experienced defenders. Having a look at gun defender across the league most are older and took to time to develop. Probably even more then key forwards or rucks.

But only time will tell who did better...

The 2010 looks like being the strongest draft since i've been old enough to judge drafts (~2000), and the gold coast were able to absolutely plunder it. They are looking set up big time. If I was putting the crystal ball out there I reckon Gold Coast will push for finals next year, may or may not make it, but they will be in there in 2015 and start their push towards a premiership in 2016 or maybe 2017. Most (not all) teams spend a couple of years in the top 8 before having a genuine crack at it.

The GWS show loads of heart, but i just don't see the talent there that Gold Coast got. No doubt GWS will move up next year but I don't see them being as good as gold coast where this year, and to be honest I wouldn't be surprised at all if come 2023 GWS are still flag less. In fact If I was framing a market as a bookie, I would have 0 flags as a solidish favourite over 1 flag.

But it's all speculation really. It's hard enough to tell from one year to the next (look at West Coast and Adelaide bombing out this year and Port rising up) and who knows what will happen. a couple of key injuries, a couple of big recruits and it changes everything.

Too hard to tell at this stage. GC have made big strides this year and GWS have had the second year blues. What GC would give to have one of GWS' key forwards though. Time will tell.

GWS will end up better but they need to add to the midfield speed this draft and get a decent ruck biggest mistake they made was letting go so many good young ruck prospects the last 2 years.

Started this year at CHB and as his form improved went forward and into the ruck.
You do know Bock has had a broken leg? and before that had to fill a terrible void.
I think that was last year. Don't quote me on this but I'm pretty sure CHB and FB in Round 1 for the Suns were Thompson and Warnock. I think the point was that Bock doesn't play in defense anymore and is very unlikely to in the future.

Too hard to tell at the moment. The gold coast midfield looks the goods but how much of that is the Ablett factor. GWS stuffed up royally by not drafting Grundy and Wingard (especially Grundy, wtf were they smoking on draft day). I just think the GWS took the safer options in the draft instead of going for the players with a higher ceiling.

I'm not as down on the GWS list as most. Cameron is someone you can build a team around and with Patton still there it's quite an imposing forward line. They definitely need another ruckman and I agree passing on Grundy was a huge oversight by the GWS recruiters. Mohr, Gillham and Davis provide a decent core for the backline but a May/Day type swingman would be good here as well. Tomlinson will be a star.

The midfield needs a real pacey, explosive guy who can spark things. Ward is a gun, and will continue to get better for the next few seasons. The perfect captain and the perfect anchor to the midfield. Adams I like a lot. Does some nice stuff in and under and has shown he is capable of picking up some high numbers around the ground as well. Coniglio probably took a step back, but I have no doubt he'll be a very good footballer for them. We saw what Greene could do last year and IMO, he didn't have a bad year again at all. Scully has put on a fair bit of muscle this season and at times has looked excellent. At other times...not so much. But once he gets used to that bigger frame I still think he can be a real force. Shiel, Whitfield, Smith and especially Treloar have all shown glimpses that they'll be good players too.

Plenty to be optimistic about I reckon, hopefully they can make some good decisions this off-season to give them a bit of a push-on.

GWS have a better list I reckon. They have the young gun mids (Coniglio/Whitfield/Treloar/Shiel/Green), they have 2 potential superstar KPF's (Cameron/Patton), they have a good ruck in Giles and a young developing ruck in Phillips, promising young KPD's in Davis, Bruce and Moore. 2 or 3 years from now they will be a force

GWS have better all round talent, but GC have a freak midfield.

Problems is GWS also have a freak midfield....Patton, Cameron, Boyd v Day, Dixon, Lynch could be what clinches it!

It might not matter, I want to know who has the better coach? Both lists are going to be strong enough that anyone should be able to get them playing regular finals, but the coach could easily be the difference in actually winning Premierships. I think it will be easy for the coaches to get distracted by the talent out on the part and not play finals-winning, two-way football.

And they'll probably keep winning enough games that the coaches won't come under pressure, but it could easily be the difference.

what's this 'it's hard to tell at the moment' nonsense? GWS's list is something else. they will dominate the afl in 2-3 years. gold coasts midfield is better but that changes once ablett (turns 30 this year) retires. whitfield and coniglio are already closing the gap on omeara and prestia.

But GWS has the best collection of young structural players. phil davis in defence with Cameron, patton and boyd. plus better rucks. Buddy was theirs if they wanted him but they rightly decided that he'd just get in the way. I'm not sure of the rules of their salary cap or when they have start abiding by everyonre elses rules but if they can hold onto those players through free agency then it's gonna be a boring few seasons for 17 other sets of supporters.

A midfield of Treloar, Coniglio, Sheil and Whitfield will be incredible. Cameron, Patton and Boyd up forward.

It's going to be very even. I think GWS will have a slightly better list due to those 3 forwards.

GWS for mine as well.
Amazing forwardline, quality midfield and a defence that is almost there.
If they could get Jaksch playing at CHB and Davis stay injury free at FB they'll be amazing to watch in a couple of years.

I do like GC, but GWS are in front of them.

Sort of like West Coast vs Sydney around 2005/2006.

Traded flags, one team with the superstar midfield which had the top 3 mids in the comp at the time, but little service up front, versus another team with key position riches all over the ground and a serviceable hard working midfield.
