List Mgmt. Who is playing for their careers in 2017?

My initial thought was similar when reading that... Without disrespecting the craft of a KPF and learning leading patterns and structures ect, surely it's harder to learn defensive zones, defensive body positioning & spoiling

He didn't seem to have much trouble in the NEAFL GF

Think you missed the point - Eagles has said he struggled to grasp playing as a forward, pointing to the tactical nous required.

.....to play forward.

Why does that make him a write off as a defender?

The club must see something there. I doubt if they've offered him another contract for his midfield prowess

Was anybody writing him off?

Was anybody writing him off?

No.

But the argument seems to be that because he expressed an inabilty to play forward that this detracts from his defensive work to the extent that he'll probably never make it as an A-grader. I don't see a binding correlation between the two.

If you're arguing this then you pretty much are writing off any chance of him playing AFL at the highest level.

My point is that I don't believe the club gave him another contract if they thought he was destined to be just another good NEAFL player..

I know sometimes an argument is made with young KPF prospects that a stint in the backline is helpful to learn leading patterns from a competant forward.

Defence i guess is to an extent a bit more reactive as well; a decent defender will be lead by a forward.

Great KPP's at either end of the ground though will be proactive in either leading or cutting off those leads.

Don't think we ever expect eagles to be great but if he could be competant and free up Andrews to intercept again like his early days or even go forward it might be beneficial.

I am not a coach

By A grader I assume you mean he’ll never make it in the AFL. Which is probably the case.

You can’t be a one on one defender in the AFL. You need to be well drilled and work as a unit. Push up and zone, etc. Sounds like this won’t come easy for Eagles who seems to work more instinctively.

I will say this about Eagles - his improvement has been huge, given where he started at his age. That makes him a NEAFL player with a chance of being good enough to play at AFL level if he keeps improving. I think he earned it by being coachable and working hard, so good luck to him.

Eagles finals series has huge. IIRC he had that run where he set up play from the D50 and just bolted through the corridor, got on the end of the work he started and delivered a pass inside 50 which set up a goal, this passage of play really summed up for me the improvement he had made since arriving at the club early last season. While I don't expect Rance like performances from him I think he is on the cusp of being a solid AFL contributor. Can't wait to see what he can do with another AFL preseason under his belt.

He looks in good physical shape. Given he hasn't had the usual battering of his body over the years, he could play well into his 30s if he's good enough.

Sneak Peak of the "Who is playing for their careers in 2018" thread.

OOC 2018- Tom Bell, Marco Paparone, Liam Dawson, Rohan Bewick, Corey Lyons, Archie Smith, Matt Eagles, Mitchell Hinge.
Update- Corey Lyons and Archie Smith have extended their contracts beyond 2018.

Tom Bell, Marco Paparone, Liam Dawson and Rohan Bewick will need to show something a lot more significant than they have shown so far in their careers, I'd also like to add Cian Hanley and Claye Beams to the playing for their careers in 2018 list, we have committed to re drafting them although probably only for one year on the rookie list.

Interesting that these 4 all have the potential as strong marking medium tall forwards, especially Dawson and Bell. Paparone and Bewick can also play that outside link up running role, but neither seems to have the consistency to cement a spot. Dawson is the youngest of the group and most likely to survive, if he can make the transition to the seniors. Can see us keeping 2 of them depending on who has the best season in 2018.

All of Bell, Paparone, Dawson, Bewick, Claye and Hanley would be on notice I imagine that 2018 is their make or break year.

For Claye, it probably comes down to injury and consistency. If he does begin to get a good long run and some good form in the Seniors he could go around again after next season, but it is possible that a few younger players might go past him.

Bell has a mission ahead of him, first to recover fully from what was a fairly nasty injury, get fit na dthen actually begin to play with some authority and impact given his size. It seems a long way back for him.

Bewick is going to have to show a lot to be at the Lions in 2019. At his age there has to be a real undeniable reason to keep him, given how many young players will also be fighting for best 22 spots. A tough year ahead. He has to perform.

Paparone has kind of disappeared off the radar a bit in 2017, with some injury not helping. The simple fact is that he might find the likes of Allison being ahead of him unless he can really show a point of difference. A big year coming up for him.

Dawson is young enough but there is now no shortage of competition so it has to be now or never for him to make the jump up in class to regularly push for best 22 selection. He still seems to be developing OK but 2018 will have to produce something more I would imagine.

Hanley is the real unknown in the group, we have seen so little of him and he has played so few games that it is difficult to really get a fix on whether he should be persevered with. Clearly the club thinks there is something worth pursuing for another season but the improvement will have to be eye-catching for him to really demand another season beyond 2018.

It is going to be interesting to watch each of these. It is unlikely all will make it. I think these players are effectively fighting for two list spots come the end of 2018.

Great Post AFLQLD
And for mine, we have 4 absolute must
re-signings this year :-
Allen Christiensen
Mitch Robbo
Hugh McCluggage
And Alex Witherden
Could probably add to that with Josh Walker depending on how his year pans out.
