We have Collingwood, hated historically due to their fans, nothing else!
Carlton are hated due to their history of buying flags, and not caring about anyone but their greedy selves, even if it is to the detriment of the game!
But Essendon, we are hated due to success - little else! I know it hurts for oppositions to admit it, but deep down, thats why Esseond are hated - and that is flaterry!
Talk as much as you want here, but Essendon fans arnt hated generally, either now or historically - Collingwoods are, thats a fact!

I don't hate Essendon because of success... in fact I don't particularly hate Essendon at all. But we all know they will once again be found out to be the soft team they are later on in the year.

It is sad to see so many people get huge egos over their team (like some people on this board seem to about essendon) when their team have proven nothing at all.

Bluey, this is getting out of hand. No-one minds a bit of shit stirring, but the crap that's been in this and a few other topics (re collingwood fans, carlscum etc etc) is way over the top (not to mention possibly actionable in court). Im sorry, but I dont even think it requires arguing, call it a fact!
Maybe it is a generalising grouping Collingwood supporters as idiots etc, but this labelling has been done for ages, and if they arnt all idiots, the ones who turn up to the games sure as hell dont help their cause! However, the fact remains they are largely disliked due to the typical (maybe generalised) pies fan.

if bomber fans cant enjoy the current situation of being on top of ladder, having levelled all comers so far this year, and having obviously the best list RIGHT NOW, then what can we enjoy ???? We havent won bugger all yet, and anything can happen. Any footy fan with a brain knows this.

But Bomber fans have had to put up with alot of dissappointment and bad seasons and injuries etc etc etc etc etc, and now is our chance to enjoy our team sitting atop the league. How long have I wished that we were one of the elite teams, as I watched us stumble and falter our way along with short kicking gameplans and other crap, while sides like the dogs, north, crows, saints, eagles, sydney were considered the best. Now its us, and were loving it.
Bomber fans who start assuring ppl we have the flag locked down, are only setting themselves up. Fact is, after 4 Rounds, were kicking arse, and if things continue we have excellent prospects. And If you dont like it, then go down the TAB and put a huge bet against us, and hope like hell we start losing.

Gonzo - if any team can be gloating at this stage, Id say its Essendon, wouldnt you?
However, I honestly dont think we have been really tested yet, we have heaps of potential, but on past performances I dont think we have looked too good - the scoreboard has flattered us.

What generally people dont like about pies fans is the frontrunnerness in a lot of them - I know a few people now who I never knew barracked for Collingwood, all of a sudden big, huge fans - at least most Essendon fans are there thru thick and thin (remember 97?).

It's why I dont like Richmond - on field I feel sorry for them, but their supporters are the worst in the league, in regards to coming out of the woodwork!

We've pretty much been rubbish for 10 years.

No team has a supporter base that is made up entirely of so called loyal people.

We haven't made the finals since 94 and in a wooden-spoon season, following a 3rd last, we still had the second highest attendances of any club.

I'm not having a go at Essendon here so don't jump up and down. You say remember 97. That was one poor season in about 20. If Essendon had of gone through what Collingwood has gone through over the last 10 years I'm sure you'd find it would be exactly the same.

Every club has so called frontrunner supporters. It's when the club is down and out that you get a real indication of the loyalty of supporters. To get the wooden-spoon and still have the second highest attendances speaks volumes about our supporters as far as I'm concerned.

The reason why Collingwood are the most hated team is because up until 1982 they were the most successful team. They hadn't won a flag for 24 years yet had still played in 8 GF's. Still contested the finals in 18 seasons. A bit like Essendon over the past 7 years.
Listen to some of the Essendon supporters on this site and the past 7 years without a flag haven't dimmed their hopes. Just like Collingwood supporters hopes weren't dimmed over that 24 year period.

Pre-1959 Collingwood dominated this competition. That is why they were hated then. This led to their supporters being hated. Over the next 24 years the supporters still carried on even though there was no premiership success. This competition didn't start in 1991. It started in 1897.

Collingwood have been the most hated club for 100 years. We are the villains of the competition. Every competition needs a villain.

Now as you know I am an Essendon supporter. I hate to tell you that you are wrong, but Collingwood ARE hated for their sucess.

Collingwood has played in 37 Grad Finals, 8 more than Carlton and 9 more than Essendon. They have made the finals 72 times in the 103 year history of the VFL/AFL. This is about 10 times more than Carlton, and about 15 times more than us (Essendon).

Now, don't go telling me "Oh, but they have only won one flag since 1958." That's true, but they played in 8 Grnad Finls between 1958 and 1990, losing them all. They were still successful.

Now over that time, they obviously accumulated a lot of supporters, who became very passionate due to Collingwoods success. They believed, quite jusifiably, the the Magpies were the pre-eminent team in Australian Football. What has made them more passionate, I believe is their Grand Final record of 14-23. Collingwood believed they have always been the best club, but they can't back it up with Grand Final victories. This makes their supporters even hungrier for success.

Forget the last 5 years. A clubs history and culture is more than just 5 years. It is made over 100 years.

However, I am proud to say, as an Essendon fan, we have won more Grand Fianls than Collingwood, and since 1940, Essendon has not only won more Grand Finals, but we have played in the finals more than any other team (which shocks Pie fans) and we have also played in more Grand Finals than any other team (that also shocks Pie fan)

It is Essendon pheomenal success since 1940, which has led to the Bombers now being Victorias most popular club, and are now perceived as Victorias leading club (not to mention 15 (and hopefully soo, 16) Premierships.

But generally, as a Bomber fan, my hatred is more for Carlton (for obvious reasons)

secondly, ask people you know why they hate Collingwood - i bet you success doesnt come up!
They have heaps of supporters due to consistent finals appearences, but in regards to real success and champion teams, the later half of last century was a bit dry at Vic park.

hey I'll come up with another generalisation here but generally Collingwood fans love to stir up other supporters, however this doesn't make me an prick or many other Collingwood supporters pricks. It just means we have alot of fun stirring up the emotions in footy supports.
