If not the 'best', but most talented Player - G Ablett snr. He was also the most mercurial.
I read this often 'most talented' but it takes more than talent to kick 1000 goals in under 250 games.
He was also a brilliant finals performer.
The lack of premierships may have pegged him back but it takes more than one player to win premierships as his son can attest to.

I think the most talented player I have ever seen is Lance Franklin. I don't rate him near the best however as he's yet to dominate an entire finals series and he has a limited aerial game.
The best players were so good overhead. Leigh Matthews was only 178cm tall but he was a superb mark against bigger opponents and could pluck a pack mark every now and again.

Carey and Kernahan were dominant CHF's.
Carey was a lot more dynamic as he could jump pretty high and had a left foot like Ablett.
Hird was another player who dominated in big games on a very consistent basis. Very slow but he could kick either side and was also a brilliant aerialist. Underrated somewhat as I would rate him above Buckley, Voss and Ricciuto.

Biased call, but Chris Judd in Eagles colours was the best I have seen. He certainly didn't have the longevity in excellence as others, but at his peak I don't think that I have seen anyone better. His ability to consistently win his own hard ball and then run away from the pack was something else.

Damian Cupido!

He played a handful of games that were superb. And then nothing. Career wise, useless. Best games from a player? Cupido could turn it on.

2. CAREY
3. MATHEWS
4. HIRD
5 ABLETT JNR.
Only saw Lethal when he was an aging thug bastard...

I would only just get Hird in a top 10 of his ERA. To me Scott Lucas was way more important to Essendon but of course he was not the Golden child. Having Carey ahead of G Ablett senior is a joke. Mike Sheahan perpetrated this complete nonsense and still does coz he is a fcukwit as Jacko said. The discussion is mute different eras game has changed so much..the snow flake generation etc etc. How can a bloke who can't get on the field for teams finals campaign coz he just doesn't feel right be up there with the greats..laughable.

I saw Dunstall, Ablett Snr, Carey and Plugged too but I was too young to fully appreciate their talents.

He was a brilliant individual player, but a cancer in a footy club.

As bizarre as it sounds given his status as one of the games greatest players, the best thing the Hawks did in '82 was to let him go. His toxic attitude was in direct conflict with what made the Hawks of that era great.

Let's see....

Better kick: Ablett
Better mark: Ablett
More goals: Ablett
Higher gpg average: Ablett
Bigger: Ablett
Faster: Ablett
Stronger: Ablett
Scarier for defenders: Ablett (ask Dipper and Gastev)
More talented: Ablett
More bums on seats through sheer genius: Ablett

More coward punches: Matthews (ask Bruns)

It is laughable to mention Matthews in the same sentence as Ablett. (Please do not laugh at the preceding sentence)
More premierships: Lethal

What made Hawthorn of that era great was your zone recruiting which netted the nucleus of your side.
It's somewhat similar to Geelong's zoning in the late 90's and early 00's which allowed the club to bring a host of future champions.
The likes of Scarlett and Johnson were no more mischievous than what Ablett Snr or Brownless were.
