Ablett Snr or Lockett. Maybe Buddy.

Ricciuto deserves to be mentioned in these discussions more, but probably not up there with those above. Definitely put him in the same class as Judd, Hird, Ablett Jnr, Buckley etc.

Tony Modra, Darren Jarman, Andrew Mcleod & Mark Ricciuto.

in my eyes those 4 brought the most joy and when on song they were awesome! im one eyed.. I don't appreciate other good players from other clubs.. id rather see them play crap when playing against the Adelaide footy club.
Add Betts to that list. If we could figure how to generate electricity from the cheers and joy his goals bring, our states power problems would be over.

Craig Bradley was an absolute road warrior. Not the best, but with near on 500 games was definitely the most durable midfielder we'll ever see. People laud Brent for his record, but doesnt come close to Craig if you factor in his SANFL record.
I reckon Gibbs will better Bradleys longevity. Just doesnt seem to miss games and generally plays to a high level. Plus hes got the football smarts to keep playing when he loses a yard of pace and his kicks dont get the same penetration.

Whether he stays with us or moves to Adelaide, i hope he gets to 400.

On pure talent : Phil Carman sadly he was unable to convert that talent.
On output : throw a blanket over L Matthews, G Ablett Snr, & M Blight.
If I had to choose a player to play for my life I'd take Matthews.

I like that you included Blight. But really you should also have Daicos. His talent around goal is certainly more common now, but back then he was a freak.

Yeah...great player but as I said, I'd have L Matthews play for my life, Ablett is a given and Blight was mercurial. The older I get the more I appreciate Daicos though

I rate Matthews the best too. Carey I rate with Ablett Snr as the next best 2. Dunstall, Lockett, Blight, Daicos, Buddy also right up there. And Buddy still has a few more years to rise even further up the list.

Ablett Senior was so good he got judged against himself, not against other players. He kicked 10.6 against Adelaide once and couldn't get a Brownlow vote. A 10.3 effort against Fitzroy got him 1 vote.

Absolutely amazing.
Matthews came 4th in 1977 despite it being the best year by any player ever. KB wasnt far behind and didnt make top 5.

Just shows that umpires have never actually understood the game, or abused their power by ignoring players for whatever reason.

Probably GAJ. Although every time I stumble across Akermanis highlight packages I shake my head in awe. If you havent seen the YouTube clip of highlights that runs for about 15 minutes you should check it out. Was a serious talent!

Ablett Jr.
Never seen someone dominate and be a class above in so many games of football, for two clubs both succesful and unsuccesful.

But I really wish I could have seen Ablett Sr to compare. His highlights are amazing, but it will never give the full picture.
It's not even a contest. Senior was/is miles ahead - some of the stuff he did was off the scale. Don't beat yourself up, just listen to those who saw senior - he was better.
