On his day, GAS was one of the greatest, but it irritated me that when he had an off day that he really really stunk. It was like going to watch Bradman's last innings. Thus many have debated if GAJ is better.

Whereas Lethal, well.... played more games, few bad ones.

I am too young to have seen him, but based on the opinion of those who did see him .....they rated him somewhere near the player of the century (or exactly that).

All round I would say Wayne Carey. He was formidable, and he had a presence that I have never seen on a football field. Wayne Carey would led his team, and he would lift his team. I have never seen anything like it - and I probably never will again. So I think its the around round package of football ability + mental toughness + leadership + confidence.

Ablett Sr on the other hand is probably the most talented player I have ever seen. I put him below Carey because unlike Carey, Ablett Sr didn't possess as great leadership qualities as Carey - which is no slight (Carey was a one in a million player).

Ablett Jr is the only other player I would have up there with the two above. I think Ablett Jr was absolutely sizzling in his prime, and I do think much of his prime was wasted, and that goes for the last year at Geelong (in which Ablett Jr was treated very unfairly - by coach and players).

Gary Snr "on" is clearly the greatest and most exciting I have seen. Explosive, dynamic, unstoppable you name the superlative.
The guy I would build a team around all season long Carey.
If you knew he was bringing his best for one day you choose GAS, but he didn't do a choice of the two for my imaginary team (if I can't have both) would be Carey.

Yeah same for me. Carey was a game plan.

kingsley was a good player. very underrated.
Had afew very good years with Geelong, was my favorite player. I still remember a day down at KP when two ladies spent the entire pre match going on about how he was no good and couldn't kick. He kicked 6 or 7 straight that day..was a good day.

It gets over looked sometimes but he was also as hard as a cats head and while occasionally crossed the line (and could be flat out dirty), he gave as good as he got and would have never taken a backward step.

Pick just one of the many facets of the game where I pointed out that Ablett was superior to Matthews, and make the case that the reverse was true. Or you could pick more than one, if you really want to make your case. But just one will do.
It's been done a thousand times before. Can't be bothered trying to convince a Geelong fan Ablett ain't the best, when it's already such a wideheld opinion that he wasn't.

You're not going to convince me otherwise.

Fact: The vast majority of people, publications, media commentators, and football stalwarts think Mathews was the GOAT.

Started watching in 1994 so didn't really see peak Ablett Snr, Dunstall or Lockett. Best I've seen is Carey, went to a lot of Friday night games as a kid in the mid 90's and watched him tear numerous new arseholes throughout that period. Booming kick, great contested mark, very agile for his size and beautiful skills. WCE Chris Judd pretty close, but didn't sustain it for long enough.

This is known as moving the goal-posts. It is common to see women using this tactic when losing a debate.
Can we build a statue to this comment please.........................................

And please make it your fixed post-script by-line Mr Melon.

Of course, such a comment can only be responded with ... "so you've been told" or #dadsforjustice

ableet only played 4 full seasons at full forward. 93-96. lead, mark, goal in a great dominant team doesn't count as a great footballer!
i loved watching Ablett kick 9 goals in the 89 Grand Final from the midfield. Especially the first goal when he ran from the centre bounce and made a long lead from the goals squares to mark on the lead at 50m in the first 10 seconds, and all the other goals he kicked that day in 89.

Biggest myth in footy.

Mathews named as a mid in HFC TOTC. Still over 900 goals. Platten relegated to resting in forward pocket.

Dipper in the 1989 Grand Final.

How do GAS possessions compare to Matthews?

More importantly GAS is such a shit bloke he dragged his team down and cost them flags. Made everything about him.

Matthews managed to be GOAT while also being the consummate team player.

Thus all those flags. So. Many. Flags.

I dare say Matthews even managed to hold on to the ball when marking, and didnt need sympathy treatment from an umpire gifting him a participation mark of the year.
a little bit peeved aren't we, Ablett the best!

Because Matthews is the media darling and Ablett the bad boy, so they vote Matthews greatest ever? Give me a break! Ablett by a long way!

4 full seasons! yes there were games he played at full forward before hand, but not the full season.

Ha, yes, the majority of people vote Mathews as GOAT because he was a media darling.

Nothing to do with him being seen to be a better footballer by people who don't follow the Cats.

Let's see....

Better kick: Ablett
Better mark: Ablett
More goals: Ablett
Higher gpg average: Ablett
Bigger: Ablett
Faster: Ablett
Stronger: Ablett
Scarier for defenders: Ablett (ask Dipper and Gastev)
More talented: Ablett
More bums on seats through sheer genius: Ablett

More coward punches: Matthews (ask Bruns)
That's quite a subjective view there. Goals per game and total goals aside, the rest of your "list" is opinion nonetheless. Your comparing 2 players who played different roles/positions as an argument to the "statistical facts"

opportunity to dispute the facts I laid out
2 facts, the rest is opinion.
