Plenty of these in the last few pages.
Love how another thread turns into a bullshit shitfight for no reason.
Not enough of them around...
i don't think im throwing proverbial.

GAS was not a midfielder. He was a mid when he caught everyone's attentions, and was considered good enough to play mid. But honestly Garry Ayers played as much in the midfield during the late 80's. GAS was always a forward who turned into a spearhead.

i loved watching Ablett kick 9 goals in the 89 Grand Final from the midfield. Especially the first goal when he ran from the centre bounce and made a long lead from the goals squares to mark on the lead at 50m in the first 10 seconds, and all the other goals he kicked that day in 89.

Biggest myth in footy.

Mathews named as a mid in HFC TOTC. Still over 900 goals. Platten relegated to resting in forward pocket.
The Ablett only played 19 games at FF myth is growing by the year. Apparently kicked all those goals from HBF and wing.

Hard to compare different eras.
Even harder to compare different positions.
In the past (not now) harder again to compare different competitions.
Let alone that most watch 1-2 games a week and even then no one really watches players closely except for the highlights reels

But in terms of sheer *you are better than everyone else in this game by a mile and we haven't even started the game and I just know you are going to win this game for your team*....

I actually think Tony Lockett was the most unstoppable footballer I've ever seen
Was too young to see the best of Mathews but his stats are amazing
Saw the likes of Carey, Ablett, Dunstall,Williams, Voss and Modra in their prime
But Lockett was unstoppable

It is pretty sad only 2 defenders have been mentioned.

Doesn't anyone remember Bruce Doull? Week in week out.

And Matera.

So a nothing meaningless statement then.
nah 1000+ goals and 3 coleman medals in only four full seasons at full forward. How many colemans for Dunstall in all his seasons at full forward? Matthews gets greatest tag due to his coaching premierships and media work. As a player couldnt do the things Ablett could do. Not even close!

Your a moron.

Ha, yes, the majority of people vote Mathews as GOAT because he was a media darling.

Nothing to do with him being seen to be a better footballer by people who don't follow the Cats.
couldnt do the things Ablett could do on the field. Captain and coach of premierships, media guru all add up doesnt it??

I saw Leigh Matthews play most of his career. He kicked 50+ goals 10 times. Many of those years he was more of a rover & kicked those as he rested.
He was a fearsome, aggressive & highly skilled player. I do rate him as better than Ablett over his career as Matthews did what he did consistently over about 15 seasons. He was great at 19 and still great at 34. He was a constant outstanding player for a lot longer than Ablett.
Agreed that he wouldn't have Ablett's showreel, but contrast that with 15 years of outstanding performance that drove his team to multiple flags. Matthews' teams won flags because of him, something Ablett did not do.

talking about best player not teams. Matthews won flags by himself? And ablett's 1000+ goals adds up to an inconsistent career does it?

Of course Matthews didn't win flags by himself, but he was integral in those side winning. Take him out and they probably would not have won.
He was an out and out champion player. Kicking 900 goals, winning multiple flags and never once playing at full forward ought to suggest that.
