Over the past four years the Tigers have added 29 premiership players to the honour board. Unfortunately someone has to miss out though, and there are a number of players who have played large parts of seasons to only find themselves not in the 22 on GF day... or maybe their best chance was 2018, when we didn't even make the big dance. So who is the unluckiest?

Sam Lloyd - 22 games in 2016, but only 8 in 2017, mostly mid-season. Another 7 games in 2018, but out of the side come finals.
Reece Conca - 6 games at the start of 2017, spent the rest of the year out of the seniors after suffering an ankle injury but played VFL after a significant lay-off. Appeared set in the side in 2018 but suffered a dislocated ankle in round 15. Recovered and played the last two H&A games and both finals.
Oleg Markov - 7, 2 and 6 games in each of the premiership years. Didn't play a senior game in 2018. GF emergency in 2020.
Jack Higgins - 20 games in 2018 and was set in the side. Played the first 13 games in 2019 before the brain injury ruled him out for the rest of the season. Played 10 games in 2020, mostly in the first half of the year.
Jack Ross - 7 games in 2019, mostly early but also rounds 21 and 22. Was pulled from the VFL GF team (along with Kamdyn) as cover for Jack Graham, but Marlion Pickett eventually took that spot. Played another 7 games in 2020 including round 17 and 18, but dropped for finals. 2019 GF emergency.
Sydney Stack - 17 games in 2019, but form tapered late in the year and he was then injured in the VFL. Returned for the winning VFL grand final, and was named an emergency for the 2019 GF. 9 games in 2020 but suspended after round 13 for breaking covid rules.
Mabior Chol - debuted in the round 23, 2016 thrashing by the Swans. Didn't play seniors in 2017 and 2018, but found himself in the side in 2019, initially covering for an injured Nankervis. Played 9 games in the back half of the season but no finals. Won a VFL medal that year. Played 11 games in 2020, including the losing QF. GF emergency in 2020.
Jake Aarts - rookie drafted in 2019 and spent the season in the reserves. Missed the 2019 reserves premiership due to suspension. Debuted in round 5 of 2020 and played 14 games, including the losing QF, but no further finals. GF emergency in 2020.

For mine, it's either Jack Higgins or Jack Ross. Higgins was probably a lock for 2019 until the brain injury. And for Jack Ross to be pulled from the VFL GF thinking he was a 1 in 2 chance to play in the AFL GF, only for Pickett to stun would be gutting.

Great question and some strong candidates. I could have given them all a vote, but in the end I ruled out the young guys who will still hopefully have a crack at a few more (Chol, Aarts, Stack, Ross). I ruled out Markov because while I was a fan, he never really cemented a spot. I was going to give it to all three of the remaining guys, but I decided to omit Lloyd as we had kind of gone past him by the start of our premiership years.

Votes to Higgins and Conca who both could have had medals if not for injury.

Deledio is probably the first out of everyone. Worked his behind off for Richmond year in and year out. Has enough one year and leaves without a single finals win with us his whole career. Then, an avalanche of Premierships drop on Richmond in the next 4 years. Obviously self-inflicted by leaving, but still.

From the list though, it’s probably Jack Higgins. He killed it in 2018, had the brain issue in 2019 and then missed out on being in the Premiership line-up even though he wasn’t all that bad when he was playing.

Gotta be Jack Ross. He’s the only player on that list that was dropped from a Prelim to a grand final isn’t he?

But out of the ones listed definitely Higgins

Drafted after 2017
Fell short in 2018
Brain injury in 2019
Wasn't too bad in 2020. I rather keep him over Pickett

Reece Conca also stiff. He was pretty good in 2018 after a long injury effected career with us and seems to be playing good footy with Freo. Was never that bad of a player, just his high draft selection led to criticism.

Thinking more about this... how unlucky is Markov? Good enough to play seniors in three premiership winning years, but just not good enough to make the premiership team, despite improving each year.

Higgins for me. 2017 not at the club, flag. 2018 sets the world on fire, we are raging favourites, done in the prelim. 2019 in best 22, brain injury, flag. 2020 though probably not so unlucky.

Jack Graham 2019 is the unluckiest anyone has been in a single year.

I missed the 1981 amateurs under 19 flag after playing all season, a flag which we won by 100 points plus, because my Dad moved in with his girlfriend a fortnight before finals meaning I had to move to Mums so couldnt get to training.

Im still heartbroken about this.
Do you want me to add you to the poll?
