Jimmy Page was a million times better than Blackmore!

But if you want to get serious, why don't you look towards Andreas Segovia. If it wasn't for this supertalent, the guitar would be held in the same regard as the Ukelele (ie. a peasant instrument).

A guitar master, he taught many of the finest guitarists around today, including John Williams.

'Twas just a bit of tongue in cheek humour, Figgy, nothing more.

I was seriously thinking about doing a fair-dinkum poll on the matter, but polls are limited to only 10 voting options. To get a handle on all the different styles of music for a start, you'd need more than that.
A poll doesn't serve its purpose very well when you have 9 options with names, and 1 option saying "Other", and anywhere between 50-90% of people voting "Other" because their favourite/nominated best guitarist isn't mentioned by name. In the end it tells you very little, except that the 9 mentioned are NOT the best, by general consensus.
All of that is before you take into consideration that many people will vote for Clapton, Hendrix or Eddie VH because they are the recognised mainstream ones, and they haven't heard of the others, just like I have heard OF Segovia, but not heard him play.

This is now too in-depth for a tongue in cheek post. :o

Hendrix is generally regarded as the greatest guitarist of them all, but he said Dick Dale was the greatest guitarist he ever saw, and I agree with him.

The King of the Surf Guitar is the King of all Guitars.

Nice call on Dick Dale Devo - a true legend.

Did you know he originally got that twangy, high-pitched 'surf guitar' sound from listening to Arabian Pop Music ?

strange but true.

My list, from what I have heard :

Segovia
Williams
Page
Hendrix
Vaughan (Stevie-Ray, that is)
Gregorian

cheers

What about Brian May from Queen ? He shats from all the above choices you made there, Darky, I'm afraid. I'm even sure i read an interview once where Axl Rose even admitted that May was by far the greatest guitarist in the world. No appreciaton of fine music i suspect many people have.

the Blackmore's Night stuff is very good too..but very different...more like celtic minstrel music...Ritchie's wife Candice sings...and they wear 16th century outfits which is pretty strange..but that's Blackmore

like i said the stuff is very different but i think very good if you can get over expecting to hear smoke on the water riffs

two albums out...and a new one coming soon from what i hear

did you know Blackmore is a ghost hunter in his recreational time..

Well if there were only ten options it would have to be.

  • Eric Clapton
  • Mark Knoppler
  • Joe Satriani
  • Carlos Santana
  • BB King
  • Chet Atkins
  • David Gilmour
  • George Harrison
  • Van Halen
  • Jimi Hendrix

Of course this goes with my personal taste in music so dont bite my head off as i believe we have been here before with the epic Harrison-guitarist-Beatles thread.

I'm with jod there thats almost my order except i have to say Halen is a touch better than Atkins and in my mind Knopfler is the greatest Clapton is just an A minor behind ;)

Yep i see your point there jod.. but if you had to list them there is no way on earth atkins would be that high in the list :D

Umm, given that Mark Knoffler rates Hank Marvin from the Shadows as the best ever, I think we can squeeze out one of those others - Maybe Harrison.

She's already taken his balls. Isn't that enough? :(

I think I would have to say Angus Young, I doubt that in my life time will I ever see another person hang from a demolition ball, or a huge big bell and play the guitar!!!

AC/DC Concerts-an event within an event!

Well everyone knows Knoffler is just being modest. Without a doubt the greatest guitarist still living.
